  1. You must have a fully bootable Mavericks system from which to boot the computer. You can then erase the volume with Yosemite, then clone the Mavericks system to the empty volume you just erased.
  2. You can erase the drive and reinstall Mavericks if you have a USB Mavericks installer flash drive.
  3. You can boot the computer via Internet Recovery and reinstall the original version of OS X that came with the computer. This is only feasible on models from 2011 to the present.

I agree - ever since I installed Yosemite it has been one problem after another! Nothing seems to work right and now everything is in slow mo with that little ball spinning every 10 seconds regardless of how few apps are open. This just keeps getting worse and I'm almost sorry that I changed over to mac. Also there is little if any support.

My computer caname with the os installed and I don't even know if I have the discs. Sorry for all the typos - I am typing 1 whole sentence faster than this thing is resonding. I am continually cleaning the cache on Firefox, running a clearner program on the os along with the diagnostics and nothing seems to work. When is Yosemite being fixed or where can I download the last version of ox?

I also have the same problems:

I am running a MacBook Pro (Retina, 13-inch, Late 2012), and it got a lot slower after switching to Yosemite. One noticeable example is that prior, I could have 30 tabs and ten applications open simultaneously, and the system worked great; now it can't do 5 applications at once. I would like to revert to Mavericks, which I intend to do using the tutorialhere, unless Yosemite could be speeded up. [I also don't like the new Preview, which I do a lot of work in.]

I did not have a time machine backup of Mackericks prior to switching to Yosemite, but I can back up all my files manually and put them back into the system after switching to Mavericks.

I'm wondering if you could let me know what my best plan of action is; whether switching to mavericks in this way might make my computer even slower.

I ran an EtreCheck and the results are here:

EtreCheck version: 2.1.4 (107)

To start with, uninstall Sophos according to their uninstall instructions.

You are experiencing - at least in part - a slow system because you have an unusually high number of page-outs - that means the system keeps having to "borrow" RAM from one process to help another. Go to Activity Monitor (Applications > Utilities) and take a look at which processes are gobbling up your memory.

You, also, have other "garbageware" installed like TuneUpMyMac.

GET RID OF IT!!!

http://www.tuneupmymac.com/uninstall/

You have waaay too many apps launching at startup/ login

You need to get rid of most of these. Get this list down to less than six items that yoU think you really need to launch when your Mac starts up.

Add or remove automatic items

  1. Choose Apple menu > System Preferences, then click Users & Groups.
  2. Select your user account, then click Login Items.
  3. Do one of the following:
    • Click Add ➕ below the list on the right, select an app, document, folder, or disk, then click Add.If you don’t want an item’s windows to be visible after login, select Hide. (Hide does not apply to servers, which always appear in the Finder after login.)
    • Select the name of the item you want to prevent from opening automatically, then click Delete ➖ below the list on the right.

DItch ALL Google wares!!!! They run like garbage on Mac OS X and are complete OS X resource hogs.

Apple Safari is the best and most efficient browser for OS X. If you do not like Apple's Safari, then forget Google Chrome and use Mosilla FireFox, instead.

Mozilla FireFox is the next, best web browser for OS X and is quite stable and gets constant updates from the Mozilla group.

Dec 18, 2014 11:36 AM in response to Allan Eckert

hi Allan - you seem to be all things Apple I have a question - i'm having VPN traffic issues after installing Yosemite. With Maverick I could remote into the office network using VPN and then connect to to the IP address for the computer with Remote Desktop for iMac. I could also then still access the internet on my iMac (outside the VPN) however after installing Yosemite, now when I log into the VPN I lose all iMac internet traffic (obviously the "send all traffic over VPN" in NOT toggled on)

Have you any information on this issue? The only thing I've heard is that Apple is pushing everyone to use a their newest VPN protocol (our VPN is set to PPP) and did not address it with Yosemite but I'm not seeing any posts about it so I'm thinking might just an issue on my computer or something. Look forward to comments - thanks!

Instead of posting at bottom of this old, long thread which really has nothing to do with your question is certainly not the best way to get the attention your question deserves. I suggest you start a new thread for your question.

As to helping you with your VPN problem I am sorry but I will not be able to be of much help[ at all. While I did use VPN before my retirement to reach the company network. My experience with VPN was I installed the software and it worked for me without any problems at all. So I never had to troubleshoot it at all.

Kappy, I followed all your steps above but when I try to download Mac OS X Lion, I click on Install, it asks me to sign in with my Apple ID to download from the App Store, so I enter my Apple ID and password and then I get the error message "This item is temporarily unavailable. Try again later." and all I can do is click ok. Help! I am connected to wi-fi, i made sure.

I would also like to return back to Mavericks since I've been encountering a lot of problems with my Mac after I upgraded to Yosemite...

1. Safari closes unexpectedly without warning

2. Adobe Runtime keeps popping-up even if I already downloaded and upgraded my adobe runtime version more than 3 times.

3. My airdrop doesn't work or cannot be detected by my iPhone or iTouch.

4. Speaker didn't work initially but was able to fix it by asking help from the forum.

5. Computer runs slower when I have 4 programs opened at the same time which did not occur with Mavericks.

6. Don't really like the desktop interface.

...and the list goes on... 😟

Then reinstall the backup you made before you chose to install Yosemite. Quite easy really.
