  1. You must have a fully bootable Mavericks system from which to boot the computer. You can then erase the volume with Yosemite, then clone the Mavericks system to the empty volume you just erased.
  2. You can erase the drive and reinstall Mavericks if you have a USB Mavericks installer flash drive.
  3. You can boot the computer via Internet Recovery and reinstall the original version of OS X that came with the computer. This is only feasible on models from 2011 to the present.

It's incredibly frustrating that there are 28 pages of people having to justify why they want to return to an OS that Apple released scarcely more than a year ago.

I shouldn't have to explain why I want Mavericks. I want it. It's my computer. I don't want Yosemite - I want Mavericks. It was free. It shouldn't be that difficult. (I'm attempting to speak for others, personally I do want Yosemite, just not yet. I'm trying to upgrade from Mountain Lion to Mavericks first, because of well read the 28 pages of complaints on here. There's plenty of reasons not to update to the latest software, one of which being that programs are sloppy these days and it sometimes takes years to get bugs worked out.)

You had about a year to install OS X 10.9 Mavericks on your Mac. Why did you wait so long and why did you wait until Yosemite was release.

SInce you have upgraded your Mac before, you know that Apple removes the previous OS X versions from their download servers once a new OS version is released. Apple does this for IOS upgrades, as well.

Apple may make Mavericks available, again (possibly with a fee for a download code, who knows), as a download, but so far, not currently.

Why did you wait so very long to want to upgrade to Mavericks and why, now, do you feel you need it?

A lot of users had problems with previous version of OS X because they were still harboring a lot of old, junk, non-updated and garbage applications on their Macs that were issues and not, necessarily, issues with the OS X version, itself.

I have had zero issues with OS X Mavericks. But, again, I waited it out until OS X 10.9.2 to decide and install this on my Mac.

I don't like playing "early adopter" much.

Plus, the previous Poster is right. Yosemite, I feel, is still a mess, right now. Much like how early versions of OS X 10.0 and 10.1 were.

I have been working on Apple computers since the IIfx and Yosemite is just insulting. In every respect - workflow, visually, design, layout, bugs and speed.

Why is Mavericks and Mountain Lion not in the App Store anymore? It used to be.

Apple is loosing its traditional customer base when it starts to treat the desktop computers like a lifestyle product.

Business wise a very bad decision.

I for one will go back, Yosemite is unacceptable.

Mountain Lion was removed on the day Mavericks was released. Mavericks was removed the day Yosemite was released. This follows the long standing tradition of removing previous versions of OS X from retail sales upon release of the next version. If you previously "purchased" Mountain Lion or Mavericks, then you can still download them from the Purchases page of the App Store. If your Mac originally shipped with Lion through Mavericks (and some with Snow Leopard) then you should be able to erase your hard drive and use Internet Recovery to re-install it.

Traditions are changing and can be changed. Now we have a 1 year old OS X not available to users. It is no harm to "ask" for an "option" to download or install to any computer a 1-year-old OSX. They dont put it now, and they will put it later, when most (not power users) people are directed to upgrade to Yosemite, most of the average users dont know how to turn back. Then they will post that Yosemite is the number one most adopted OSX and everybody is happy.

Unfortunately most of the comments here are just like opinions not suggestions (including mine). Apple would not read uninformative discussions anyway. For those who wants Mavericks, I like most Mavericks users have the Mavericks on USB and it would be nice if I could distribute it to people in need, like putting on the sharedrive. But not sure Apple would like that.
