So, although it sounds like a bit of a faff, the best solution for me will be to backgrade the new Macbook Air to Mavericks

Unfortunately, Macs cannot boot from any OS older than what they came with. So, if yours comes with Yosemite preinstalled, that is what you will need to get used to. However, if there is still stock left over which has Mavericks installed, go for it - ask when you are buying it.

100% not true. You are able to install any older OS on the new machines. I've done it with Mountain Lion and Lion multiple times on my 2013 Macbook pro.

    Interesting.

What build number/model identifier is your machine?

Which OS did it come with originally?

Can you explain briefly?  So far, I've tried to use a bootable recovery disk from my old mac (running Mountain Lion) which left the circle with a slash through it instead of an apple logo on boot up (of the new mac).  Rebooted the new mac from internet recovery, got it working and it promptly corrupted my time machine backup.  Have a new backup running on my old mac now (estimated time 3 DAYS).

Might have to wait for the time machine to complete and try recovering from that.  In the meantime, I have an appointment at the Genius bar where I hope they can just install ML and we can be done with this mess.

But any help you can provide would be appreciated

    Thanks

Alan - Can you look at this report and tell me why the agents and daemons are red? Does all look well, or do you see any 'worrisome' items in this report? Thanks so much.

I'm a different Allan and mine is spelled the same as his, so I'll give you the only answer I have.

I suggested to the EtreCheck developer that something must be wrong with how he's checking these since we seem to be seeing it quite often, but his only response was to have the user re-install OS X.

That doesn't prove anything. Early 2013 MBP's originally shipped with OS X 10.8.2. Perhaps it would have been clearer had babowa said "Unfortunately, Macs cannot boot from any OS older than what they [first] came with."

No need to get into a panic there. I didn't know the answer to your question and was in the process of composing an email to Etre on your question. since MadMacs0 has provide us both with the answer there is no need for me to do that now.

It wouldn't hurt to ask again. I'm still convinced there is a good chance he's misinterpreted something (that's already happened with Safari Extensions), but I've been unable to have it happen with any of my setups so I can investigate it further. Seems to me that it shows up for too many users and a few who have re-installed said it didn't help.

I'd actually really would like to know if/how he managed to install two older OS versions on a newer one (without a serious system hack).

Hi - I also have to downgrade to the OS that was on my Mini Mac as well as my Macbook Pro computers before (can't remember what it was), but as a total non techie (and old enough to still remember all the DOS PC commands!), I don't fully understand the instructions. I think I have to go to the Apple Store to have it fixed unless there is a 'Dummy version'. I don't remember making a back-up at all before upgrading to Yosemite.

The purpose of my note is to tell you why Yosemite totally *****: 1. Safari bombs all the time; 2. the internet connection has become totally unstable and very very slow; 3. big documents (with lots of graphs and tables) become unresponsive and then I loose my work...... all the time!!; 4. waking up from sleeping does not happen on the first try, it is a struggle of powering down, powering up, try and try and try again.

I simply don't understand how Apple could release this OS version internationally without ironing out at least the basics. I really regret moving from PC to Mac!!
