The purpose of my note is to tell you why Yosemite totally *****: 1. Safari bombs all the time; 2. the internet connection has become totally unstable and very very slow; 3. big documents (with lots of graphs and tables) become unresponsive and then I loose my work...... all the time!!; 4. waking up from sleeping does not happen on the first try, it is a struggle of powering down, powering up, try and try and try again.

That is not Yosemite, that is your system install either conflicting with non compatable, out of date or destructive third party installs or else your compete HardDrive slowly dying. Try opening your own thread and attach an etrecheck report Visit his site here and download, run and copy/paste it into your post for analysis.

Foolishly, a couple of days ago I installed Yosemite on my 24 inch early 2008 iMac, thinking I had 8GB of RAM whereas I only have 4GB (3.06GHz). My machine barely works. Everything is so slow and I have to wait while the coloured beachball takes ages to follow instructions. Admittedly, I only have about 50GB available on my 500GB HD, and am now increasing availability by dumping 150GB of movies on to an external drive (So far taken 18 hrs to empty the trash!)

Perhaps fortunately, I had Time Machine working before I installed Yosemite.

Could you or the other kind experts on this forum tell me what I should do?

    Many thanks

    Pete,

I have to disagree with your logic. I have a brand new Sept 2014 MacBook Pro 16 GB loaded with everything Apple offered to upgrade it.

Installed Yosemite and everything went downhill. Memory issues, applications running slow.

My older MacBookBro 2011 with on 8GB was faster on Mavericks than my new system on Yosemite.

Apple has really disappointed on Yosemite.

Well, Pete, even though I 'did not open my own thread' could you see what is wrong and why my machine(s) have become unstable..... not my connection as the PC in my small office still works perfectly. I am convinced it is the Yosemite that I installed on both the computers.

    Any advice what to do?

Of course its Yosemite. If no conflict exists before installing Yosemite, and then everything goes to hades, then its Yosemite. The problem could be, as was in my iMac, that Yosemite didn't play well with my graphics card - a Radeon 5770. In fact, as rare as it might be, the graphics card worked very well and efficiently with the snow leopard OS X, but the ENGINEER/tech in Ontario CA that worked with me for 3 days finally said that after all of the diagnostics, that I needed to take it into my local apple repair place, and he gave me a CS Code that paid for everything, which included a NEW graphics card, and, incidentally, a new internal superdrive (when we tried to reboot from the original disc that came with the iMac, the drive kept spitting it out). His, and the repair shop both said that "THE SOFTWARE was responsible for damaging the card, or the card didn't like some process that Yosemite ran, and died from it!"

Since the new card was installed  everything is peachy-fast, smooth and easy to run. So, Minniehill, call 1-800-my apple, work through the testing and direction of the tech, and tell him you heard that the card is the culprit, and that you want it tested and if at fault, replaced, ON APPLE.

This is so over my head but I'm going to go purchased an external hard drive so I can get this hideous  Yosemite operating system off of my used to be high end computer.  I can't even open up my iPhoto program.  Whatever---this should have come with a warning!!!!  I really like the park Yosemite tho.

So not sure if this helps anybody but I thought I would follow up here since I had posted my report here.

Went to the Apple store yesterday for diagnostics and a VST as mine is a mid-2010 which has rebooted on occasion since Yosemite download. Really wanted to have them look at the hard drive to see if there was any degradation worth mentioning.

All hardware reported fine. No issues came out of the VST either. Probably suggests a clean refresh of Yosemite if anything. For those of us that have gotten this far or maybe even not this far, I might recommend a fresh download of Yosemite before giving up on it. Mavericks was no great shakes IMO either. So I am not sure going back to it is such a wonderful idea.

While I have been backing up my files via an Internet service, I got a Seagate HD....,many on sale right now. Backing up the entire HD. Then will likely take it back to Apple for a the Service diagnostics which is much more detailed especially relative to the HD. That will take like a few hours as opposed to a few minutes. Assuming no issue arise in the Service Diagnostics, I would like to see how Yosemite does with a complete new refresh especially if I wipe the machine clean of any remnants of the older OS that have been used on this machine and anything else that might be kicking around. Frankly there should not be much kicking around in here since I cleaned everything out a few days ago anyway.

So the Apple Tech in the course of discussion says "well you know, every time you upgrade your OS without upgrading your hardware, your computer is going to run slower......just about no way around it."

Well I sort of know that. But why oh why then does Apple continually push us to upgrade to their latest OS regardless of the ages of our computers? Should be ridiculously easy for Apple to know what vintage computer is about to download what and when and can as easily toss up a dialog box or something like it that says....."you might not want to do this...click cancel if you want to think about this before downloading." Whether it is intentional or not, it seems to me that the process of continually encouraging new OS downloads onto older machines even mid-life machines like this one simply has the effect of obsoleting them sooner. Mac's are or at least have been top of line machines and are priced accordingly. At least in my case, I am not ready to toss aside a top of the line computer in 3-4 years. Not prepared to see it run poorly after an OS download either and not terribly thrilled with the idea of tossing stuff off the computer that for all intents and purposes was not slowing down the machine with the previous OS.

It is not so much the latest OS in and of itself that bothers me. It is feeling like you are boxed into a corner with no option really but to download the lasted and go through whatever you have to go through to get your machine running right again when in fact you were happy as a clam right where you were. In my case, in order to help my daughter with her music files I had to get iTunes 12.0 because ....well we probably all know that iTunes 11.4 was/is something of a mess. I could not get iTunes 12.0 without Yosemite. So if iTunes 11.4 was not such a mess I never would not have downloaded Yosemite. So got myself into another Apple mess trying to deal with a different Apple mess.

I know people are frustrated...I am frustrated obviously. However especially if your machine is not brand spanking and even if it is but giving you trouble after a Yosemite download....I might give a fresh download a try before going back to Mavericks. Mavericks was never any great shakes IMO. So I am not convinced that going back to it is all that wonderful. I can definitely see why people would want to do it though. Frankly no amount of telling people their computer hardware or software is the problem is really going to get folks very far when these machines were running fine with all the same software BEFORE a Yosemite download. But for those that are having trouble or have had trouble...yes back up everything, then get rid of all those stray files that are running around in your Mac....if you have had other OS, they are there. Get rid of any other stray, old files and bits of previous OS and software no longer being used that are still in there. Then do a complete fresh install of Yosemite into a machine that has had all that stuff cleared out. See if that does not get your machine functioning the way you expect it to WITH Yosemite. Honestly, I would do that before taking a backwards step into an OS that I frankly don't think was very good either.

I have done enough to this machine to get it back running reasonably again. But it is still not where it should be. So I am part way through taking my own advice. Hope this helps.
