Q: How can I uninstall OS X Yosemite and return to OS X Mavericks?

Unfortunately this forum was not of much help to me other than to convince me to take my two computers back to the Apple Store for them to hopefully fix or take my machines back to the preivous OS. I was hoping to find a DIY solution for the problems created by Yosemite, but alas, no luck. But, I will take your advice and try to reinstall Yosemite. Maybe it smoothes out the many, many problems. That is why you were asked to start your own thread. This one is a disjoined mess! Nobody knows who they are responding to and people are performing maintenance not suggested for them. But you chose not to start a new thread.

I did not refuse to do this, I did not know what you were talking about and said so. So, how do I open a new thread? I tried a 'new discussion' and it said that I am not permitted to do so. I am haqppy to cut and paste my diagnostics into whatever I have to, but please assist.

If you are taking the computers back into the Apple store, they can help you make sure that any vestiges of previous OS are out of there so that when you do a fresh install of Yosemite, you will be installing clean. In fact, they will install it there with you if you want. Then you can probably check it out right in the store and if still not happy...they will I am sure assist you in going back to the previous OS.

Make sure to back everything up before going in.

For those that are not quite used to the format here,  think this is where you might be getting tripped up. You are really going to "ask a question" and the question really becomes the title of a "new thread". You then get a text box. At that point it will look like any other web site forum and your original question will appear in the Title field. You can insert whatever you please in the text box including your Etracheck results. You can also change the original question that is now appearing in what will look like a Subject or Title field.

It takes some getting used to if you are thinking it will act like a normal web forum. Remember that it is really a place to come get questions answered. So the format is designed to get you to look for an existing question within a category (in this case OS/Yosemite) that has already been asked hoping that the answers to that poster's question answers your question as well. There is really just an extra step in the process but you do end up with a Subject or Title field and a text box just like any other web forum thread starter.

I just upgraded to Yosemite as well and am having big problems in "Preview"

When I go to edit the color/ touch any of the bars the entire image goes grey. Do you know why this happens or how I can fix it?

I went back to Mavericks and I am so happy.

Yosemite is a failure for Apple at this stage.

What makes you say that? Do you have links that say it is a failure for the tens of millions who seem to be using it without issue? Or just because you either couldn't work it out or didn't like the colours. Mavericks and Mountain Lion recieved many times more complaints than Yosemite.

There have been many reports in these pages about Preview issues post Yosemite. Not sure there are any answers that I have seen as yet. I can edit images like jpg files. The only "issue" I have had that is preview related may have been an issue in Mavericks as well. I just don't know because I use Outlook and really don't use Mail. If I open an image in Preview that is an attachment from Outlook or even a group of image attachments, they appear to be in the aspect of the original photo from the sender. If I open them from Mail, Preview appears to be choosing some default aspect and the shots are all distorted as heck. I really only noticed because I went looking for trouble and wanted to see what images opened in Preview that I had as Mail attachments looked like. So as I say, might have been the same in Mavericks for all I know. Have not had the issue from Outlook using Yosemite and did not have it with Mavericks either.

When you start the mashine hold down : cmd + R, untill the "line" instead off apple comes on the screen. Then choose disk...., delete the HD, close disk.... and........install Mavericks again:)

Actually, that will just re-install Yosemite. You would have to be booted to a Mavericks drive to access a Recovery HD capable of installing Mavericks or use Internet Recovery <Command><Option>-R if the Mac originally came with Mavericks on it.

Was looking for this and stumbled upon this thread.

But here is MY reason for wanting to downgrade:

I believe Yosemite made some changes to the OS such that disk cloning using SuperDuper (SD) or Carbon Copy Cloner (CCC) is unbearably slow to boot and use, rendering cloning in OSX almost impossible.

For those who doesn't know, SD or CCC allows you to make the EXACT COPY of your machine to an external drive (Flash Drive, external SSD, etc.) that is BOOTABLE. You can then take that external drive to any OTHER machine and boot from it --> you'll have the same exact copy as the original machine. Think of a portable copy of your machine!

Anyways, here's the result:

1). Old MacBook Air and Pro running Maverick --> cloning works --> booting from the cloned drive is fast, as if the cloned image is installed in the machine

2). New MacBook Pro Retina 2014 --> cloning works --> booting from the cloned drive is slow, 20 minutes just to get to the Login screen, 15 minutes after Login, 2 minutes to start an app, 5 minutes to open Finder, etc.

This cloning test was done using CCC and 3 different USB drives:

- 256GB PNY 3.0 Turbo (no. 1 in Amazon with 1200+reviews)

- 64 GB Sandisk USB 3.0 UltraFit

- 64 GB SanDisk Micro SDXC

All USB Drive works awesome for cloning under Maverick.

Now, my new MBP Retina comes with Yosemite, so I am still trying to figure out how to downgrade to Maverick.

I am a SuperDuper! user and v2.7.5 released before Thanksgiving seems to be working fine for me.

I have talked to several CCC users who have been having a variety of issues ever since version 4 went into beta testing in September. According to them there are still issues with v4.0.3 released last week. You might be able to get ahead of the game by signing up with Bombich as a beta tester using the link at the bottom of this page.

You should be able to do that using an Internet Reinstall (<Command>-<Option>-R).

On the downgrading to Maverick, I guess I can make a bootable Maverick install CD since I have my old MacBook Air that is still running Maverick. Hmm.. tempting..

Yes, although I don't have USB 3.0, so I can only vouch personally for FW800 on a spinning external drive.
