Yosemite slowing down Macbook Pro

Ever since i've installed the new Yosemite OS X, my Macbook has slowed down (CPU usage spikes up rapidly, RAM 'Memory' usage is always above 5-6GB with nothing running) is this normal?

NOTE - I have a 13" retina with 8GB RAM, i5 CPU, 256GB SSD. It was never like this, i'm actually experiencing some lag now....

Why is this happening and would it be better to upgrade from a 13" to a 15" MBP?

Right after installing Yosemite your Mac starts re-indexing your harddrives. It takes a lot of resources apparently. This might take a couple of hours. During the process your Mac is slow and some Mac's are hardly usable. After this re-indexing is finished you Mac should speed up again. Safari can stay slow. Cleaning the old internet-cache can help.

For years I've been using a program called Little Snitch. It monitor all network activity, stops any non legit connections and alerts me if some if there is something trying to go out from the computer that should have go out (e.g. it prevents hackers, should they every get in to the computer, to take anything out from it). Removing this program fixed the problem for me. So I guess it is just not compatible with 10.10.

I did a clean install from my usb with OS X Mavericks, because my macbook was heating up too much and I had to work.

But I found out that the Harddrive and my user account was broken. So I had to delete my ssd drive. After that I was able to reinstall Mavericks.

I will try the same step with Yosemite.

I downloaded Mavericks via AppStore and created a bootable usb drive with Mavericks on it.

This is also possible with Yosemite. And I recommend to do a clean install via usb.

I will give you my feedback next weekend.

Hi, this is my first post on Apple support communities

Even I realised more fan usage and the battery draining on my MID-2012 8GB RAM MACBOOKPRO after installing Yosemite..

But I had creative cloud installed and realised it was constantly crashing and not responding.. so i checked it out on Activity Monitor and shortly after quitting it and ending the program the fans slowed down and turned off. My macbook only reading 65 degree rather than 97!

Can it be?

I am having similar problems

Have MacBook Pro (Retina, 15-inch, Late 2013) i7 with 16gb ram

moving around the screen is extremely slow and the screen animation is poor

Windows often display only partial elements and some sections are partial hidden under another open window

Also when viewing hovering over the task bar on the second display monitor the icon name dosnt display although there is a faint outline of where the txt should be

I upgraded to Yosemite so I could install the latest OS X server 4 (10.10) but the performance so far is poor and might have to go back to Mavericks

Any solutions coming for these issues?

Same problem here. I downloaded Yosemite yesterday and everything work perfectly fine until this morning. After I typed my password to log into my mac a little download tab look a like thing appeared at the bottom as if i were downloading something, but i wasn't. Either way i couldn't even log in because it didn't even download completely. I tried a different method to logging in method (Rebooting in safe mode) and thats how I'm logged in until now... Is this a bug or whats the reason behind this problem?

Thank you

I too am facing the same issue. At any point of time the memory usage is at least 5GBs out of the 8GB RAM that my MacBook Pro has. That is even when I am not dong anything nor is any app or window open. Moreover, 8GBs is the max upgrade of RAM available for my 2012, 13" model. Its a 2.3GHz Intel Core i5 machine. Please somebody help.
