Q: Yosemite location services not working?

So, I am unable to locate myself via the Maps app or via Find iPhone app for my MBP and Mac Mini. I verified location services on and even cycled it off and back on again. Also tried turning off Find My Mac and turning back on again with no results. When I look up the MBP and Mac Mini with Find iPhone app, it says that it is "Online, no location available" and this is happening for both devices. I am having no issues with my iPhone or iPad - just the desktop/laptop devices. I tried restarting my modem/router and still no joy. Thoughts?

I've seen this problem since the 10.10.1 update, and have resolved the problem (temporarily?) by deleting com.apple.GEO.plist and then force quitting com.apple.geod.  To delete the preference hold down the option key Finder>Go>Library then open the Preferences folder and delete com.apple.GEO.plist.  The com.apple.geod can be forced quite from the Activity Monitor.

    Hello,

I am having troubles with location services, as well.

I tried terminating the com.apple.geod service, delete com.apple.geo.plist from user library, resetting PRAM and repair disk and disk permissions.

Using Chrome and Firefox, I can get my location in google maps; using Safari I cannot. Weather widget and Apple Maps are also "blind" to my location.

Using the same wifi network I can retrieve the location of my iphone, using Find my Mac, but it is unable to get the MBP location!

    Any ideas?

    Hello,

from what I've seen, we can't do anything to "solve" this issue since is a server-related one. It seems that Apple disconnect the location services here and there, maybe for technical or updating motives. Mine is working fine so far, but sometimes it just stops working for a couple of days and then starts again, without any modification on my side.

Moreover, this does not seems a "local network" issue, but more a single computer one, since I've heard people that can access location services from one computer but not on another that live in the same network.

Just be patient, and the services will start working again also for you.

    Thanks Andrea!

I was more relaxed when I asked a friend that has a MBP like mine (bought at the same time and place) and she also has the same problem.

I was using Internet Sharing... I turn it off, then forced quit com.apple.geod in Activity Monitor. Now my location in the Maps.app is working. Turn Internet Sharing back on to see if it would stop, it is still working.

    no solution worked for me.

then I tried changing my computer name (under system preferences > sharing).

it's the fourth day since this fix now and it still works:

maps, day and time, weather (sidebar), find my mac... everything.

    hope it lasts...

I have tried everything in this thread and elsewhere on the web, but can't get Find my Mac, Maps, Safari or Time Zone to find the position of my MacBook Pro 15" Late 2013 after installing Yosemite 10.10.3. I have tried clean installing twice. Other Macs on the same wifi network with older versions do not have this problem. I even tried connecting to my iPhone's wifi hotspot, but that did not help even though Find my iPhone's location works. Strangely, both Firefox and Chrome finds my position via Google Maps, but not Safari.

I installed the beta 10.10.4 on the macbook air , everything worked , but I decided to install Yosemite from scratch with the procedure referred to by cmd - r . Now the location service is not working I tried everything but nothing . In my opinion there are several copies of Yosemite some have bugs and others do not

I too am having this issue. Tried all the various cures (resets, removing various plists, force quitting Geo, clearing caches etc etc) suggested by various poster with no luck. My 2012 Retina MBP and iPad Air2 (wifi) are still showing as being located at my home address in the UK, where they are now not been for over a month. They are in the south of France over 1000km away from their shown location My two iPhones are locating correctly. The Draytek Modem/Router I am using has never been connected and working in anywhere else other than France. The problem is that if either my MBP or iPad are stolen, the "find my device" will "find" them where they aren't. Also various other apps which require a correct location are not working properly. I definitely have a French IP address unless I switch on my VPN to select what country I wish to appear to be in for BBC iPlayer or Sky.
