You gotta update the itunes. Now, I tried to update and had a problem with it. So here's how I solved it: Download the updated version of the itunes (12 something) directly from the apple.com/itunes website., using another browser (I used google chrome).

Is it the ideal way to update the itunes? No, the ideal way would be to update from the app store, as I'm sure you know. BUT, if you do that through the app store, it will probebly not download and install.

So, you can do one of two things:

1) Wait for the Apple fix the problem

2) Download, with another browser, the new itunes version directly from www.apple.com/itunes

Good luck and may you have a wonderful life.

I tried downloading with Firefox via the apple.com/itunes page without success.

I then right-clicked on iTunes and selected "Show Package Contents" > Contents > Mac OS > iTunes. This worked, but in a kind of funny way. It seemed to launch iTunes via Terminal. Oh, well. We can hope it is only a temporary thing.

I have a second update. I cannot locate him now, but a generous forum contributor offered this procedure that actually did solve this problem

1. First you must delete iTunes from the Applications folder. Apple will not allow you to simply move it to the trash, as it is an essential system component. You must use Terminal (from Utilities folder). First, open Terminal and then enter the following (suggest that you actually copy and paste each command line, one-at-a-time:

cd /Applications/ (Then hit Enter key - This places your action into the Applications folder.)

sudo rm -R iTunes.app (Hit Enter key)

You will be asked to enter your administator's password. Do it and iTunes will be gone.

2. Re-download and reinstall iTunes. Several members advise that you use something other than Safari for your download. I used Google Chrome. They also suggest that you not use the AppStore update for your download. Instead download directly from apple.com/iTunes. It worked for me. Thanks to all who contributed to this solution!

I tried everything to get mine working, all the suggestions I could find online. Nothing would work. Then just by chance I had a reminder I needed to update Java, just done it and I thought, I'll check iTunes again ... Would you believe it, the application opened! Almost forgot what itunes looks like!

No idea if this is the fix, but it may be a combination of the things I tried above and this, so might be worth a go?

I'm having the same problem. I upgraded to Yosemite overnight and now iTunes will not open. I even downloaded iTunes again without success. Apple needs to fix this soon and if all of my playlists and settings are gone when it is fixed I'm going to be seriously upset.
Now more work time wasted trying to make my MacBrook Pro work properly and more money out the window using up my Internet download time downloading and re-downloading massive files. Ugh!
This isn't an insignificant bug considering iTunes is one of Apple's big platforms. You would think they would have ironed this one out before releasing Yosemite and iTunes 12. In the last five years, every time Apple does a major upgrade it's been a serious mess. It's why I'm refusing to upgrade to iOS 8 until at least six months from now when they finally have it working properly. Love the products, but I'm seriously losing faith in Apple.
Common on, people. Fix this iTunes/Yosemite bug and soon.
