Q: An error occurred while moving messages to mailbox “(null)”.

When I delete a message, I get the following error: "An error occurred while moving messages to mailbox “(null)”."  What's more, the message does delete, but it doesn't end up in the trash, or anywhere for that matter - it's lost forever.  Anybody know a fix?

The same thing happened to me after upgrading to 10.11.4. Is that what happened to you. I learned from a different but related thread that one fix is to remove the account from mail and then recreate it. Since it is an IMAP account you shouldn't lose any messages.

I know this is an aged thread, but today I encountered the same issue, and I wanted to share the new fix for this bug.  What works for me is opening Mail/Preferences/Accounts, and at the bottom in the "Trash" section, deselect "Move deleted messages to the Trash mailbox".  Immediately beneath that, the "Store deleted messages on the server" will become greyed out, but still selected.  My deleted emails now go to the server.

as of El Capitan version 10.11.6...
