i feel so stupid asking this because I know it's gotta be simple. But how do I use my earbuds kinda as a hands free to talk on the phone? Thought I'd just press the center button and talk into it. What am I doing wrong?

No, you don't hold it to your mouth. It will work just fine without you doing anything. It's designed to work from just where it is.
if the headset has a build in mic then it should work without you pressing anything
if you're in a call or using some app which let you record your voice or whatever
