Macbook making "Wake Up" Noises while lid is closed! Anyone?

You know that sound that the Macbook makes when you open the lid to awaken it from sleep mode? On random occasions, my laptop makes that sound when I CLOSE it.

What happens is:

1. I close laptop.
2. A few seconds later, drives & fan (?) spin down and it goes quiet.

Now one of two things occur -

3a. Comp goes into sleep as usual, or...
3b. Comp makes whirring sound, same as the one it makes when waking up / being opened, drives / fan spin for a bit, then die down again.

Does anyone else have this problem? I had an iBook G4 for the last couple of years and it NEVER did this. I bought the Macbook last week, could I still return / exchange it at the Apple Store without being hassled? I really just want one that works PROPERLY...

Macbook 2.0Ghz 1GB RAM 80GB HDD, Mac OS X (10.4.7)

Mine does that too once in awhile. I'll have a streaming radio station and put the computer to sleep. Then a few seconds later, I hear the hard drive and a few seconds of music, and then it goes to sleep for good. I wouldn't worry about it as long as the computer's not getting real hot on the bottom.

Would you recommend playing it safe and returning /
exchanging the unit? Would they give me a hard time
about it even though I'm still withing my 14 day
return period?

You could try it if it's less that 14-days old. At least you can try another one at the store and see if it does it.

Does the MacBook wake up on its own if you leave the lid open but choose "Sleep" from the Apple menu? If so, you can rule out an issue like a key that's sticking up too high and being pressed down when the lid is closed on top of it. This would cause the computer to wake up and then go back to sleep and then wake up and then go back to sleep...

You could also check the System.log through the Console application in your /Applications/Utilities/ folder. If you know just what time the computer woke up, there should be an indication there why.

My wife's white macbook 2.0 GHz did the same thing, with no USB or other external devices plugged in. We took it back to the Apple Store to have it checked. The very knowledgeable Apple Genius did some tests and deteremined it was a bad logic board. Even though we had purchased this computer nearly a month ago, he surprised us by offering to exchange it for a brand new week 38 Macbook. Awesome support from Apple!

UPDATE: I returned my Macbook to the Apple Store and got a black one instead. The guy at the genius bar said that it was "normal behaviour", and that the floor models did the same thing.

Anyway, my black one does it too. Bad luck or normal occurence?

Try closing your lid ALMOST enough to have the magnets shut it, but enough to let the sleep light come on, THEN close it all the way. This USUALLY makes mine spin up again while closed.

My black MacBook does not do that. Is mine defective? Can both have "normal behavior" if two computers act differently?

Again, I would be curious to know if the MacBook wakes up if the lid is open but you've selected "Sleep" from the Apple menu. If it does, note the time it wakes up and we can check the logs to see what process initiated the wake.

Well, then you don't have a software problem. A software problem would happen no matter which way the computer was put to sleep (lid closed or open). You have a hardware problem with closing the lid.

I would check to see if there is any chance a key from the keyboard may be sticking up even slightly higher than the others. If it gets pressed down by the screen closing on it, that might cause it to wake up (just like pressing a key when it's asleep but with the lid open). If you can't see anything like that, it's possible the trigger that detects if the lid is closed or open is defective. If that's the case, you will probably have to take your MacBook in for service.

If you do need to take it in, at least it should be fairly simple, now, to demonstrate the problem to the technician.
