Q: new message window in Yosemite Mail is way to big for a small screen

I have a problem with Mail (Version 8.0 (1990.1)) since I have updated to Yosemite. Writing a new Message with Mail (8.0 (1990.1) becomes almost impossible.

Every time, when I intend to write a Mail and press the Buton „new Message“ the window of the new email opens so large that it s not fit on the screen on my Macbook 13“. Approximately one-third of the new-message window is off the screen. The window width can not be reduced in size. Now I have to shove arround  window, to see what´s on the right side. If I move the cursor to the right outside edge no double arrow appears. There is only an arrow appears to amplify the already too large new-message-window. I tried a clean install, but the problem is still there. I changed the toolbar. Does not helped. Even my 27“ iMac shows the same issue. The new-message-Window covers the whole screen. The only good thing is, that the 27" is big enough to show the whole window. It seems that Apple programmed a fixed non-adjustable size of the new Message-window. Any Ideas?

    Hi ..

Click the bottom right corner of your Mail window then hold down the arrow then drag to the left to make the window smaller.

    Then quit the Mail app.

Then relaunch the Mail app to see if the window size is correct.

    Hi too..

I really know, how to do it. I own since 2004 Apple Devices. I have tried your way in the first place. If I grab the upper/bottom right/left corner I can only adjust the height but not reduce the width of the "new message window".  I am able to expand the width of the windows. Even on the iMac 27" it´s the same issue.

But thank you for your respond.

I can adjust every other window in Yosemite in width and height easily, only in Mail the "new message" - Window is not working proper.

I have exactly the same problem whether I'm replying or creating.

In the "header" of the email I see the "From" field and the "Signature" field - and it seems the signature field is creating the width.

Can't change the width only the height.

    @pastonchase

Unfortunately, if you talk to Apple you get only the advice to do again a clean install or erase any settings of the Mail-Programm. But it never works and cost me a great deal of time.

But your Reply saved my Day. Great After I removed my really long Signature / Disclaimer I was finally able to adjust the with of the new message Windows. So it seems, that you have found a nasty bug in Mail for Yosemite. Till Apple will solve this issue, I will handle my new messages/Mails with copy and paste of my Signatures. Thanks a lot and have a great Day

I forgot to mention an important fact. Only erasing the signature in the actual opened New Message- Window wont help!! You have to remove your Signatures under Mail/Settings/Signatures. After this you will be able again to adjust your New Message or Reply-Window in width. After you have adjusted your New Message - Window, restart the Mail-App and put your Signatures back under Mail/Settings/Signatures. Now anything works perfect. You can adjust any Windows in Mail, as it should be.

Yes I just removed my signature completely and it now can be resized.

I wrote out my signature again and all is fixed.

    Thanks!

    Hi

I can do the first part - get rid of my signature, re-size, close email and restart. But when I put my signature back I then get the very wide screen again which I can't re-size.

Is it because I'm cut and paste my signature or I am I missing something?

    Thanks

Yes it's because you are cutting and pasting.

    Don't do that.

Just type it out again and avoid having a long signature that spans over the page.

Less is more anyway as they say.

    Thanks

Everything working OK now - when you have to put in so much about privacy, virus checking, confidentiality etc.etc. - the signature takes up more space than the email itself!

Let's hope Apple sorts this out quickly because having to cut and paste the signatures in to emails and resize windows is definitely a bug that needs sorted and far form idea for those who need to have legal statements and privacy policies on our emails.

Until then I will make sure the rest of the 20+ people in the office using Macs don't upgrade to this OS version.

    Hi Adrian,

there is no need for cut and paste the signatures for every e-Mail. Just follow the described procedure. Remove your Signatures under Mail/Settings/Signatures. After this you will be able again to adjust your New Message or Reply-Window in width. After you have adjusted your New Message - Window, restart the Mail-App and write your Signatures back under Mail/Settings/Signatures. Now anything should work perfect. You can adjust any Windows in Mail, as it should be. If your Signature is to big, you can copy them into a file from the Textedit-App, change the Text over Format/Make Plain Text (with this step you remove hidden formats), then  change the text back over Format/Make Rich text and copy in the last step this Text back to your Signatures under Mail/Settings/Signatures. Close your settings, restart Mail. This procedure takes you only minutes. After this, it works for sure.

Sorry for my bad English, but I hope you will understand what I intend to tell you.
