Q: Java Runtime Yosemite

Since the install of Yosemite of my 2011 iMac 27" I have had the start up issue of it stating I need Java Runtime.

This message appears:

I have installed the Java update 8 onto the computer, but still have the same issue!!
Here is the evidence of the install:

What can be done to fix this issue at start up, every time?
Thanks

Well I hadn't planned to return to this tread (unless the problem returned), but 24 hours later I' still free of the Java RE curse.

However, I only did step 4) above, and made no attempt to delete the previously installed "higher" version.

Right now, I'd say just do the same, and let us know how it works for you.  It certainly has worked for me (so far).

    Good luck... Tony

This is what I discovered and what resolved the issue:

If you go to  your system Library and find your LaunchAgents folder, you should find that Yosemite installed an Alias from your Resources Folder that launches the Java update window. Inside the LaunchAgents folder it should show this Alias: com.oracle.java.Java-Updater.plist

After I tossed the Alias in the trash, the problem went away. Hope this helps.

While you've probably solved the pop-up problem, you've done so by installing an older, unsupported version of Java. You could be creating a security nightmare for yourself in order to solve a much smaller problem. I posted this earlier in the thread about what worked for me, but I think it's a mistake to install older, unsupported versions of Java. It's always been the Mac OS's Achilles heel.

I didn't have that .plist file in my LauncAgents folder, but there was one about Facebook video something or other which I saw in this thread or elsewhere regarding this Java issue that this might have been a culprit as well. So I tossed that respective plist file in the Trash, and I guess we'll see how it works...

Sorry, but no sooner did I make the last two posts, then the pop-up appeared again for no reason. I hope Apple addresses this problem in a security update.

Oh my... Okay I'll definitely write feedback to them right now. I'm surprised that after months of beta this happens.

Honestly, I've both the "Apple Version" and the "Oracle Version" installed.

If I go in system preferences -> Java -> about, it says I've 8u25 installed.

Honestly again, I don't know what Apple packet covers, since, already in ML I had to install Oracle JRE in order to have java pages and apps working, after installing Apple packet

Just chatted with Apple and got the same as on other posts re this issue: after Yosemite install then trying to use Safari a pop-up requests Java Runtime. Sends you to Oracle which downloads latest version 8. Good safe version but as Apple tech noted: " As it happens, Java did not include a particular file in the latest version to make it compatible with Yosemite (at least not yet); so by adding this update you still are running Java 8; but the file needed comes from Java 6. It sounds complicated but trust me… it works and you’ll be totally secure."

So, answer is: go ahead and download/use Oracle's version 8 (which you've probably already done). If you're getting the pop-up saying you need Java to view content, go to Apple site and download 6 as well, but leave 8 alone. All good.
