Oct 18, 2014 10:05 PM in response to Rob Snowby Perennial beginner,I have the exact same thing, and the JRE pop-up appears even when nothing is (obviously) actively running. i.e. no programs in the dock are active.
I also installed the JRE Version 8/25 (though it was quite a performance to navigate that oracle website!).
My fear is that something surreptitious is trying to run in the background, and may have been prevented by this new Java requirement; in which case, I'd like to know what it is and where it came from!
Appreciate any feedback/solutions.
Tony

Oct 18, 2014 11:18 PM in response to Rob Snowby catmankee, same problem in this discussion:
Re: java runtime environment alert at startup
If someone has the chance, please try as in my comment (at the moment, I can't)

Oct 18, 2014 11:29 PM in response to catmankeeby dcnicholls,I just installed Java for OS X 2014-001 without any problems, but I'm not sure how I triggered the problem last time. When I test for Java installed, it says JRE8 update 25 still. It doesn't seem to have hurt anything, but not clear if it helped

Oct 18, 2014 11:43 PM in response to dcnichollsby catmankee,But, after installing Apple update fix, your startup was ok or you still had the message, dcnicholls? Excuse me, but I didn't understand

Oct 18, 2014 11:43 PM in response to dcnichollsby dcnicholls,OK, looks like it doesn't work. I uninstalled JRE8, reinstalled the Java for OSX package, then rebooted. The Java verify site says I don't have a Java plugin installed.

Oct 18, 2014 11:50 PM in response to dcnichollsby dcnicholls,This is relevant, from the install process: On systems that have not already installed Java for OS X 2012-006 or later, this update disables the Java SE 6 applet plug-in. To use applets on a web page, click on the region labeled "Missing plug-in" to download the latest version of the Java applet plug-in from Oracle.

Oct 19, 2014 2:00 AM in response to dcnichollsby dcnicholls,This may solve the problem: http://www.java.com/en/download/help/mac_10_10.xml second paragraph, which points to the download page at http://www.java.com/en/download/manual_java7.jsp
I've not tried this yet but if one can believe Oracle, it should work.

No apparent trouble but the message occurred sporadically, so I don't know it is has gone. It didn't just appear at startup. See my later post concerning installing JRE7.

Oct 19, 2014 2:22 AM in response to dcnichollsby Perennial beginner,I also installed this older version (V6?) without attempting to remove or disable Version 8.
So far no problems (i.e. no new pop-ups after a few hours), but always difficult to prove a negative.
I'll certainly repost if I'm plagued with fresh pop-ups! But fingers crossed, you won't hear from me again! -
Oct 19, 2014 3:26 AM in response to Rob Snowby WiseJD,I have now installed the Java SE RunTime for Yosemite a couple of times as the popup still occurs. Even as I was typing a post on this Forum the popup showed up. It is strange and who knows what installing a couple of times does ...if anything?

Oct 21, 2014 7:33 AM in response to Rob Snowby -rye-=987=-,I'm also having this issue. Wish there was a fix (I haven't seemed to find one yet)

Oct 21, 2014 8:48 AM in response to Rob Snowby catmankee,It seems to be gone, on my iMac, at the moment.
These are the steps I made, it someone want to verify it's not only my case:
1) uninstalled all JRE (i had updated to 8u25 and I couldn't install 7u71 because of that) as in this document from Oracle (see "uninstalling JRE"):
http://docs.oracle.com/javase/8/docs/technotes/guides/install/mac_jre.html
Please note you have to enable "root" to delete those files and directories. You can find enabling procedure here: OS X Mavericks: Enable and disable the root user (tip: for "edit" look at the bar. I lost 10 minutes searching for it in the panel )
2) installed 7u71 and restarted. Message still there.
3) installed 8u25 and restarted. Message still there.
4) installed Java for osx 2014-001 (here: Java for OS X 2014-001) and restarted. Message GONE!
Hope it's definitive.
Please let me know.
