Q: Apple TV won't wake up mac after Yosemite update

Hi all,

Yesterday, I upgraded to Yosemite and to iTunes 12.0.1.26. I have a mac mini (late 2012), an Airport Extreme Time Capsule (latest model), and an Apple TV 3 (A1469). I upgraded my Apple TV to the latest software version when iOS 8 came out.

When my computer was running Mavericks, Apple TV would see my library even when my computer was asleep, and would wake it up. After upgrading to Yosemite and the new iTunes, after my computer and the Apple TV go to sleep, the Apple TV can no longer wake up my mac. Sometimes it will remember it has seen the library and simply would not connect. Other times, it would just ask me to turn on home sharing on my computer... When my mac is awake, home sharing works fine.

This is a very annoying problem, and I suspect it is related to iTunes, and not to my Apple TV. I should mention that my iPad and iPhone are experiencing the same -- they see the shared library when the mac is awake, and do not see it when it is asleep.

I have tried to turn off home sharing on all my devices, to wait, and to turn it on again. I tried resetting the PRAM on my mac. I reinstalled the Apple TV software. I restarted all my devices. Nothing worked.

Is anyone else experiencing this? Do you have a solution, or is this a bug (that will hopefully be fixed soon).

Thanks!

Mac mini (Late 2012), OS X Yosemite (10.10)

I Have a similar issue and I have identified that the issue for me is that if you wake the Mac from sleep with the atv or any other home sharing device, then shutdown the device or connection, the Mac will not instantly go back to sleep. However if you try and connect to the mac from the atv or any other device while the Mac hasn't returned to sleep I then have the same issue as you trying to connect to iTunes with it either saying home sharing is off or cannot connect.

what I have also found is if another device is keeping the Mac awake for homesharing then other devices cannot connect either. They can only connect when it eventually goes back to sleep.

What I have found is if you allow the mac  to go back to sleep then try and home share it works, or if I go the Mac and force it to sleep, it also works.

the issue is almost certainly to do with the bonjour service.

Well, I don't know why this works, but I solved this problem. Apparently, renaming my computer (Preferences-->Settings) had re-enabled wake on LAN and now things are working well. It's odd, but it works. If anyone knows what the bug was, I'd be happy to know.

(Now there's a new problem, though. The computer likes to sometimes rename itself, adding (2) or (3), etc. to its name. It's strange, but doesn't affect performance so I can live it.

    Hi Boaz,

I´m facing exactly the same with my Mini which is remotely controlled by a MacBook via Screensharing. Everything works fine unless the Mini goes to sleep. After that I´m not able to wake it up by the MacBook and Wake on LAN (Wol). Even the share is not listed in Finder´s sidebar anymore. It simply doesn´t show up in the share sections anymore. When I log on to my router I can see, that MacMini is not active and I can send WoL package from the router. That brings the Mini back alive, although it still doesn´t show up in the Finder sidebar. When I connect to the Mini via Finder "Connect to share" and type in: vnc://ip-MacMini I can use screensharing again.......

Also I faced the problem with indexed network phantoms....means my Mini was listed in network shares with several different indices e.g. MacMini(2) and (4) and so on..... I wasn´t able to connect and curiously these phantoms show up even when my Mini was shut off! Looks like bonjour or something else is not working properly....

I fixed phantoms by reseting my router (AVM firtzbox), which worked out perfect since yesterday and no indexed phantom is showing up anymore.....

Haven´t fixed the screensharing or waking up thing yet....

I was also taking part in beta testing program and reported these problems to Apple. In Mavericks everything worked really perfect!

Graz9 Just wondering... Are you also using a Mac Mini?. I am and I'm also having this problem with my atv not waking up my Mac after updating to Yosemite.

Hmmm... same as me. 2012 Mac Mini. I don't have the answer, but there's obviously a pattern here.

Hey Crew...Something occurred with this latest update to Yosemite and perhaps iTunes.  I have a 2012 Mini I run headless and remote in from my MacBook.  Since this update it falls off the LAN and requires I manually wake it with the button.  Hopefully, Apple will address this.

Not just the Mac Mini... I'm having the same issue and am using both ~2010ish MBP and 2013 iMac.

Apparently today's updated (10.10.1) fixes my problem.

Haven't tested it out yet but I'm pretty confident it's fixed.

Installed this last night. So far, it seems to have fixed the problem. Not enough time has passed, though, so we'll see...

I installed angnd tested  10.10.1 yesterday.  It did NOT resolve the original issue.  Still, the only work around is to set the Energy Saver So the Mini never sleeps.

So far, the bug fix worked for me.

Before I installed the update, I:

    1. Reset my airport extreme.

    2. Changed my computer name

    3. Set the airport extreme back to the previous setting.

The reason for this is that as part of the bug, my computer name kept changing due to "ghosts", and resetting the router seems to eliminate them.

After updating, I turned home sharing off and the on again in iTunes. Since then, Apple TV (and other iOS devices) has been able to wake up my mac without problems. (And, it hasn't renamed itself, either).

One thing you may want to try, which helped me, is to do a PRAM reset. Also, I suggest you run some clean-up and maintenance scripts (I find that onyx is good for this).

My 2012 Mac mini started NOT waking from sleep on demand after I installed Mac OS X 10.10.

I installed Mac os X 10.10.1 and there is NO change; it still does not wake from sleep on demand for iTunes or Screen Sharing access.

I am having the same problem. I just dumped a bunch on money into my home theater and now I can't access my digital library because my atv won't wake up my computer. Sorry I am a little confused at where you are renaming your computer. On the computer or atv? Not sure how to change the name on the computer. Can you elaborate?
