Q: nsurlsessiond - taking up all bandwidth!! Help ?

Ever since updating to OSX yosemite, the process "nsurlsessiond" has been taking up my whole bandwidth for the past 2 days...downloaded almost 5GB of data so far!!

 

I read on some forums that it could be due to icoulddrive, but my icloud is OFF and it literally has nothing in it...

 

Please help! How do i stop it ?

    I had the same problem after upgrading my OS X version to 10.10.3.

    I solved the problem when I turned off the "Verify updates" and "Install update of OS X" in AppStore Preferences; in that panel, now, I have all box unchecked. May this help a lot of you.

    Another data point for nsurlsessiond causing massive data usage.  Mine started when I upgraded to Yosemite (10.10.2) from Lion.  I am now running 10.10.3 but the issue remains.  I am running Little Snitch but the "deny" for nsurlsessiond does not seem to work properly.  I manually "allow" and "deny" web connections as they pop up so I can use Activity Monitor to see what is happening on the network.  On my particular system I have determined that when I "allow" swcdn.apple.com to connect, nsurlsessiond launches soon thereafter and starts its massive downloading.  If I "deny" swcdn.apple.com, nsurlsessiond does not launch and I have not seen the massive downloading.  I am still researching what swcdn.apple.com is supposed to be doing.

    I am yet another person who would like to know what this data download is.

     

    Much of the speculation here is not correct, despite some claiming successful outcomes; against the grain, I am using 10.10.2, and do not use and have never used iCloud for anything except Find My Mac — everything has always been turned off.

     

    With every log-in, this large download commences. It would be easy enough to block it, but I want to know what it is.

    Another download was going when I just sat down at the computer, and it just stopped a moment ago. Now nsurlsessiond is connected to sum.casalemedia.com:

    This article is about iOS, but it explains nsurlsession. I get what it does, but I also have a gut feeling that the hundreds of MB that are downloaded every day is excessive (over 1.5 GB yesterday, over 500 MB today, a lot of which appears to be related to advertising), especially when it is designed to be out of my control (controllable when using command line or third-party tools).

    If you use Little Snitch, open the network monitor, find nsurlsessiond in the list, and double-click on it. A detailed info window will open. cmd-2 will open the list of servers nsurlsessiond is accessing, which for me today is quite long and varied — this is much more than iCloud. If you don't see anything in the server list, it is probably so long, with long urls that don't have natural line breaks, that it breaks the list display.

     

    In this second window, cmd-3 will display connection statistics, included when the connection has occurred, and how much data went up and down.

    I am having the same issue, consuming 500MB every day from swcdn.apple.com.  This is the apple update servers. Thanks to tips this thread, I have auto-download of updates turned off in my iPad and mac, and turned off spotlight suggestions and bing web searches, and disable iPhoto uploads to iCloud and never use iPhoto or iCloud. 


    Nothing stops it except little snitch, and it keeps retrying to download from 12 different IP address at apple every 15 seconds forever.  I have opened a support ticket with apple since I too need my bandwidth back.

    I had the same problem and saw what everybody sees in Little Snitch... went into my iCloud prefs and unchecked Photos... all activity came to a complete stop. And guess what, I'm not getting a beachball as I was for the last few weeks.

     

    Fingers (and toes) crossed that it works for ever...

     

     

    Oh, and I unchecked all "Apps that store data in iCloud" under the iCloud Drive options... who needs it? Not me, not yet.

    Hi Zen, yes your script worked well. My IT friend made it work automatically with a double click. I believe I have found the real problem. I have a program that is being synced to Icloud and to the programs own cloud. I have turned of the programs sync to Icloud and now the problem has gone away. I believe the 2 syncs were chasing each other - one would sync and the the other would think it needed to sync again and so on....... It also upset my network by saturation it, causing my backups to fail. Lots of problems but all sees to be OK now. Thanks for your help. Peter.

    got this issue last night and was trying to solve it as what Zen recommended. It works fine but it ended up to screw my cookies up on my browser.

     

    the problem still persist even though i have closed my iCloud & photo sharing.

    then in my particular case, i figured out what the issue is.

     

    it is my adobe creative cloud. Well, i am using photoshop and the CCsync ruin up my bandwidth.

    i force quit all of these related software and now my macbook is back to normal.

     

    if you already closed your iCloud and still got the issue, you better check any other software which has connection to 'cloud' system. in my case, it is adobe creative cloud.

    Same problem with El Capitan 10.11.1

     

    today i have turn on on my iPhone iCloud Keychain, and the problem it's appear. Now i have turn off iCloud Keychain, but nsurlsessiond, is still continue to "suck" my bandwith.

     

    Now i solve with script by Zen, until next reboot

    Same thing here. After going through 10GB of quota in less than 12 hours, Little Snitch told me that nsurlsessiond had done 600MB in 20 minutes. I turned off iCloud Photos completely but it kept going. Signed out of iCloud completely and it kept going! I unloaded the Launch Daemon rather than blocking the server to stop it, neither of which are particularly user friendly propositions. Somewhat frustrated by this mysterious rogue behaviour...
