Q: Where have my MS icons gone in Yosemite?

I really like Yosemite, but one thing I noticed right away was that my MS document icons all turned white on the desktop. If I open a Finder window they appear in the List view, Column view and Cover Flow (does anyone use that anymore?) but not in the Icon view. Any ideas?

Same for me here... clean install of the latest yosemite on a brand new macbook pro ; the problem appears with various apps (not only MS) and is probably related to yosemite only... ; tried everything mentioned here without success. Hope this will be fixed soon...

Same here , tried everything, nothing has any effect.  Yosemite is sooo slow !!  So much I hate about it. !!  Simple things like having the spotlight window in the middle of the page.

Indeed TinkerToolSystem 4 did the trick, and whatever the app for which you have icon problems (it restored icons for MS, torrent files, inc files, php, sitx, etc...) ! I bought it yesterday .

I wonder how the cache cleaning option of this app works because I have tried everything for manually cleaning os x caches without success...

To restore program icons (e.g., MS office, pdf, etc)

In Yosemite -> Open Finder -> Right click a document file -> select Show View Options -> Uncheck Show Icon preview

    Hope this helps.

This solved it for me with exact same issues as others here.  Deleting /Library/Caches/com.apple.iconservices.store does the job. You will need to enter your administrator password for this. Follow up with a reboot.

    1. Delete the contents (including hidden files) of the following Cache folders:
      1. /Library/Caches
      2. /System/Library/Caches
      3. /Users/{YOUR_USERNAME}/Library/Caches
    2. Reboot

    This worked for me.

Bought new MBP with Yosemite pre-installed a few weeks ago and had the same issue since I installed MS Office.

Deleted all files in all 3 folders as you recommended. (Just into trash) and restarted.

    Problem solved, thanks!

I was trying everything without sucess ad finally Onyx worked for me. IMPORTANT: Make sure you check 'Icon services' in the User tab under Cleaning section, by default it is not checked and I think that is what solves the issue

I tried everything from clearing/ resetting caches manually or with Terminal to cleaning the harddisk using Onyx and other programs. Nothing helped until I did the following: completely remove and then re-install Microsoft Office. I don't know whether this will be the solution for everyone here but I guess it's worth the try.

Fix that worked for me but not for a friend of mine ...

Right-click the document icon > Show View Options

    De-select "Show icon preview"

Never mind this ... do what JK9 suggests above (deleting the iconservices folder)

I don't think you need to go this far.  JK9 suggests deletion of a single folder/file within the Library > Cache folder, and this seems to have worked perfectly for me.

I lost the whole desktop (except for one icon) in front of a class today after plugging an HDMI cable in, via a Moshi adapter.

    I'm using a MacBook Pro 17 Mid-2011 with the latest Yosemite. I was running a 1920X1200 screen on a 1920X1080 projector

After resetting the PRAM, deleting some plists and making a few other stabs in the dark, I clicked on my desktop, which revealed the "Finder/File/Edit/View/Go/Window/Help" tabs, then I chose "View>Show View Options." I slid the "Icon Size" to the tiniest possible size, then I slid the "Grid Spacing" to the largest possible size and did a "Command+A to select all. I dragged my one Icon to the left and voila! Icons! All of those rascals were hiding just off the right side of my screen. I guess there's more than 1920, virtually speaking.

I Have this issue come and go not just for ms files but ALL file Icons. Then some reappear but many files are "missing" the icon even though the are there. I have done several Disk verify and permission verify..because of slowness. If this is a Yosemite bug why has is not been fixed?
