Q: Bluetooth problem with OSX Yosemite: Magic Mouse and Keyboard

Hello everyone,

I've a problem on my MacBook Pro with Retina Display 13" (late 2013).

I've always used it plugged with an external monitor (I love double screen), magic mouse and bluetooth keyboard. On Mavericks everything was perfect with this setup.

Yesterday I installed OSX Yosemite and I've found a boring problem: my Magic Mouse and my Bluetooth Keyboard have a 0.5 second of latency, lag. This happen when the Macbook is not plugged with battery charger. When he is on charge, the problem don't exist.

I noticed this bug also on the public beta of this summer and submit the feedback.

I hoped that they fixed this before release but the bug is still here.

How can i solve this boring problem?

MacBook Pro (Retina, 13-inch, Late 2013), OS X Mavericks (10.9)

Thanks for your good analysis. I went ahead in the meantime and called apple support, basically with the idea to make them aware of the issue and some potential solutions. It took quite a while to get the guy skip his normal walkthrough (did you reboot? did you pram rest? ...) He kept suggesting me to go to the apple shop, because it is a bluetooth issue - it took me again a while to make his mind go "click" when I explained, neither did the problem occur any time earlier, nor does it now occur with a different operating system such as mavericks or windows. He also asked then to reinstall - I had done that before and told him before.

So first of all, Apple's support really s*cks big time.

Then I told him, look, I've a workaround but there's a whole lot of folks who manifest in this forum that they are substantially not amused. So what is your escalation procedure internally so you can from your end make some people know? Oh no problem you just go to our feedback site.

So that proves that Apple, on top of their support being useless, are entirely uninterested in the problem.

I mean, come on here are a number of people wasting a lot of time finding out what causes an issue, and they all will agree that it is coming in with Yosemite, if not even a very late update to Mavericks, and it happens reliably - while, ceteris paribus, with another operating system, such as windows using bootcamp, on the same hardware it just will not happen.

While I have a workaround and I do like these products a lot, when I see that a company does not show any interest in their users, I just wonder whether we should not start massively firing mails at their execs so that they will notice.

Me too. I use my Android phone for tethering on several Macbook Pros for years now. After migrating to Yosemite they started to make troubles. The current behaviour is that the Bluetooth connection toggles between "Connection" and "Disconnection". I use HardwareCrowler to show such hardware events as notifications. Funny thing is that at the same time I use several Creative Bluetooth headphone without any problems. So Apple, another bug for to fix. Couldn't be that difficult, right?

Everybody should try the new beta of Yosemite 10.10.2 at https://appleseed.apple.com/sp/betaprogram/  to see if it solves the provens with Bluetooth. The release notes say that developers should especially have a look at wifi.

That's strange. It's available at the Mac Developer Program. I thought it would be at the public beta program, too. I guess it will be soon.

MacPro5,1 3.2 GHz. For what is worth, I'm no expert but I spent a few days trying to find solutions, read this and many other forums and have the trackpad working to a point where is not acting up as much as before. The keypad remains intermittent while connected, but I still can use it to type this although it lags.  Both the keypad and the trackpad exhibit the disconnected/connected behavior occasionally, this is more obvious when not in use for a few minutes. These are the following issues I found:

-Software: WD Quick View for Mac-latest release as of today. Using My Book Live: Removing this app improved the trackpad behavior significantly.  I have the software now in Windows under Parallels.  When this software is opened up in Windows it drives the trackpad bunkers!  This is another example on how software can impact bluetooth.

-The Wi-Fi, that is usually off for me, seems to affect my trackpad and keypad when is on.  There is discussion about how this is not possible (waves) but maybe is Yosemite.

-The closer the trackpad/keyboard are to the computer, the better they seem to work, although RSSI 70 seems to change little +/- 7. But there must be other issues (Yosemite) since it is intermittent.  Shorty after bootup, while Yosemite is doing it's last bit of crunching, the trackpad acts up if you try to use it, but as soon as the computer calms down the trackpad works just fine.  This acting up behavior was the one I had before all the time.

-I tried all the following, although is not clear to me if any one or the combination helped me out:

    pre-boot/boot resets

unpairing/re-pairng (while holding the keyboard/trackpad on/off button down during the procedure)

    trashed bluetooth

    Yosemite full reinstall

OnyX cleanup (seem to bring some improvement as well)

    A note about handoff:

I had handoff operational since Yosemite original installation, worked like a charm with my iPad & iPhone.

Lost the handoff after doing all the above.  After a lot of reading someone recommended turning airdrop on for everybody

on the iPad & iPhone and it worked.  There was an iCloud issue that I resolved by sending a sound to the iPad & iPhone from my MacPro.

Handoff now works as is supposed to again.  I did get some 'Cocoa errors' but tried again and again until they went away.  Note you will get these errors if you try to open mail that is not available (account) in the computer/device you are working on.

Apple really needs to come up with a fix for this.

Hope this helps someone out there.

    Good luck!

    Thanks Dave!

I followed your instructions and it worked.

    Thanks for sharing.

Had the same issue this morning and have been able to resolve.

I updated my rMBP to Yosemite 10.10 at home over the weekend and when returning to my office desk this morning, was surprised to find that my Apple bluetooth devices (magic-mouse and trackpad and keyboard - all Apple) connected to Yosemite without me having to do anything. So the bluetooth id's of these devices must be being stored in the PRAM I think because I did a complete reformat of my disk and a fresh installation. None of the old preferences regards bluetooth were migrated across.

So, reading previous posts, I first removed all three devices from the bluetooth system preference panel, rebooted, immediately held down CMD+ALT+P+R to reset PRAM, waited to hear the 2nd chime, let the machine boot and added mouse, trackpad and keyboard back again.

So far, so good. Hope that also works for others. Hope Apple can resolve this in a future update, quite an oversight as many seem to be suffering and it's all Apple products in use!

Apple sent me through the same hoops that everyone else has gone through, but after getting a new mouse and keyboard provided by apple and having the problem persist I think I have found a solution.  I downloaded the Yosemite version of Onyx and ran the full program.  This was about a week ago and other than the initial slow reboot I have not had anymore problems with lag, ghost touches or connectivity issues.  Good luck to you all and I hope Onyx will solve the issue for everyone with the issue.

My solution was to switch my Magic mouse off, open a drawer and put it away. Don't waste your time trying to troubleshoot a problem that is Yosemite's fault. If you need to use a mouse, buy a cheap USB mouse and save yourself the aggravation. Your sanity is worth the $20. The only fix will be when Apple addresses the issue.

Update, I also started experiencing kernel panics and distnoted runaway processes so I when through the painful process of performing a clean install.

And guess what........ nothing changed. I had 2 kernel panic crashes on a clean system before installing anything and the wifi and bluetooth issues are still present. If I could I would go back to Maverick which was very stable on my MBPr late 2013.

Thanks Apple for a crap OS!!

So, after downloading a clean install of Yosemite, the problem has only been seen a couple times, and I have not had to do anything for it to remedy itself beyond that.

The reason I am posting is because people are finding solutions, but it doesn't seem to be the same for everyone.

I most frequently see the problem upon wakeup, when the mouse lags for a few seconds before functioning properly. I do a lot of graphic design and small detail work so a high performance mouse is required at all times.

I don't have a solution, and I don't know that there is a single solution, but Apple is turning off the swing voters with this issue for sure. Hope they figure it out soon.

That's what I did. I had the mouse problem with my iMac. Now have a wired Logitech mouse. No problem. Luckily I have a wired keyboard. I hate keep changing batteries anyway.
