How do you delete widgets in OS X Yosemite?

I clicked the ➕ button in dashboard to reveal all available widgets. Then i clicked the ➖ button and all widgets began to wiggle like managing apps in iOS. All of the 3rd party apps had the "-" sign on the top left. I attempted to click the "-" buttons to delete the 3rd party apps, but nothing happened. I could only move apps around, but not delete. Is this a bug, or am I missing something?
