Annoying slowness of Preview after Yosemite upgrade

Hi,

After upgrading Yosemite there is terrible slowness when scrolling thru 100+ page pdf files on Preview. Before upgrade there was only smooth scrolling.

Anyone with similar annoying performance drops? It just stops after 1-2 pages for 1-2 sec.

Tim Cook ‘CEO of the year’!!!

congratulations Tim!!!

i cannot use my retina macbook pro to read pdf files

i know that you are very busy with all these interviews and fantastic awards however i have bought my macbook for a reason

and this reason is not to play "angry birds".

if it is apple it is working

if it is yosemite it is not

microsoft developed this new operating system. That is why it is not working

Tim Cook was named CEO of the year!

congratulations Tim!!!

Tim Cook also congratulated apple employees for all that they have achieved!

congratulations to all!!!!

a lot of congratulations and awards hence their is not enough time for someone to address the issues with the operating system

i cannot read my medical books on my macbook pro and now i must ask what "pro" stands for?is it for "professional"?

operating system of course is not so important as the awards and the congratulations hence congratulations to all of you there in apple!!!

i saw ToU at the bottom

i too saw "Apple Support Communities" on top

i do not know if there is anyone from apple here however it is ridiculous to be CEO of the year and to congratulate your employees if your major product ,that is the operating system of iMac,MacBook Pro,etc is not working

and when i am saying it is not working i mean it cannot read files ,pdf files

i do not blame you personally friend babowa

i haven't said that you work for apple

however i cannot be satisfied with apple and if i am not allowed to write my opinion in "Apple Support Communities" let me know

Has anyone seen a pattern regarding specific Macs or age of Macs experiencing/not experiencing sluggishness for large PDF files? Obviously (I assume), not everyone is experiencing this problem. I have an older MacBook Pro (vintage late 2008) running Mavericks and still haven't upgraded to Yosemite due to the PDF problem and the WiFi problem - If it ain't broke, don't fix it. But I'm missing out on many new functions and apps as a result. Not willing to take a chance on losing functionality on the older laptop. It's frustrating!

There is no one from Apple here - not sure why you are addressing fellow users/volunteers who spend their free time trying to help other users. Aside from that, you might benefit from reading the ToU (link available at the bottom of every page).

and therein lies the problem. no one is paying attention and the issues remain unresolved.

Dec 29, 2014 9:54 AM in response to babowa

it really is a problem because the operating system is not working.

Support, Feedback and Genius Bar did't solve this issue so far

MacBook Pro and iMac cannot read pdf files

Apple makes it quite clear that they do not participate here however their operating system is not working.Where apple is participating? In awards?

apple should participate in these forums and try to understand the problems with the operating system that they produce

their main product is the operating system and not a keyboard ,a mouse or a watch .apple is not logitech.

how can i be happy with the magic mouse if the operating system cannot read files?

Apple would certainly learn a lot from this and another well know forum. Yes there is a lot of junk posts and user error, but, there is also a great deal of valuable information to be gleaned. Not all problems happen in a lab or during an Apple Care call. Got to get into the real world sometimes. It is an amazing untapped resource. oh well...

i believe that every operating system(from microsoft or apple) when it comes out it is not 100 % ready. No surprise here.

yosemite is not ready and windows 10 are not going to be ready when they will come out

mavericks is working perfectly and i am very happy with my macbook pro

nevertheless i am frustrated with apple because i cannot use iCloud, continuity and iPhone communication with mac on mavericks .In addition i cannot update a lot of applications with mavericks and generally apple is trying to force me to install yosemite that is ,an operating system that is not ready

i am lucky because all my files are on dropbox .I am lucky that i have not trusted apple and iCloud to store my files because i couldn't be able to use my files with yosemite since yosemite cannot read files

if you want to do a serious job like storing files books etc you must never trust apple.i trusted dropbox for example and now i can use my medical pdf files with mavericks

maybe this issue is going to be addressed maybe not

apple is not in a hurry to fix this issue and i can understand it.

It is not important for apple however i must read my medical pdf files and edit them every day

I am using a 2012 Mini i7 Quad Core with 16GB RAM. The problem with largish PDF documents in Preview 8 under Yosemite has been causing me a great deal of frustration.

Eventually I have dragged Preview 7 onto my desktop from another disc. If I open the a document in Preview 7 and then let it sit there the program registers 155.8MB of Memory usage in Activity Monitor.

If I open the identical document in Preview 8, under the same conditions, it registers 2.97GB.

Although that is should not be enough to stop the computer - it does. Memory Clean App shows that Preview 8 is using near 9GB (at the same time as Activity Monitor is showing the lower figure) so something is clearly wrong.

I am now using Preview 7 again but cannot get it to operate as the default PDF program and so I have to open documents from within Preview which is certainly both bad for workflow and annoying.

I cannot get Preview 8 off my computer. This looks like an Apple problem.

apple is not in a hurry to fix this issue

is interested more in "apple pay"

that is : how we can pay better

we have already paid for retina macbook pro(pro is for "professional",a professional laptop that cannot read files)which we cannot use but this is our problem

all these remind me of microsoft's lack of respect for customers

microsoft has changed however apple is trying to imitate microsoft's policy : we do not care about our customers as long as we are paid.only money is important

with disappointed customers i can not see how they can make money

So, I stumbled across something that made a significant improvement. I had the same issue as described with PDF rendering in Preview (since the Yosemite upgrade) that was unbearably slow. I turned off Smooth Text and Line Art (in the Preferences->PDF menu) and this helped significantly. I still feel that Preview is a little sluggish, but this is usable. I can imagine that you might find a document that unchecking this could degrade the quality of the fonts/art rendering, but so far for me I haven't found this. And, now I can go back to using Preview...

I'd be curious to hear if this helps out others.
