Q: iTunes 12 will not allow movies to be added

Older Mac Pro, OS 10.7.5, iTunes 12.0.1.26.

Permissions repaired, directory checked, no problems.

Hard drive is OK, plenty of space.

Been using this computer for a couple years now as my Apple TV streaming source.

The only movies I can appear to add are those with mp4 extension or ones I created using iMovie. Movies I have already had and added to my library that have m4v extension still remain in the library (on my media drive, so designated by iTunes Preferences and reverified that it has not changed).

Also, I cannot drag and drop even those movies that Ad File to Library will add.

So, I am just guessing, Apple has messed something up with this release.

--- A side note, on my newer Mac Pro running Yosemite and iTunes 12.0.1.26 I have the same problem. Apple did a nice job with allowing my "registered computers" to be automatically logged in to without having to enter my info. That aside, I can navigate to my other computer's media drive, select the movie - an mp4 - and it does not add to the iTunes on my Yosemite computer! Yes, I waited an appropriate time to allow cross computer getting the file, it did not appear in the reading bar.

I used to be able to Handbrake my movies to mp4, even with the m4v extension, and drag them onto the iTunes window and they would add. I could then Get Info and get them into the correct Genre.

So, despite following the help and what and doing all the proper checks….

Just how does one add mp4 or m4v movies to the NEW iTunes?

    Also, I strongly discourage using QuickTime for conversions. It fails a lot. And even if it does finish a conversion, you better make sure the converted video plays correctly: sometimes the aspect ratio can be distorted, sound can be missing or out of sync, the image can go black, etc. This reason for this is that QuickTime relies on third party codecs that you might need to install. A popular QuickTime codecs was Perian, but it is no longer actively developed.

     

    Therefore, it's better to use HandBrake to convert videos: it's much faster and the results are much more reliable. In case you do use VideoDrive, make sure to select HandBrake for the conversions (on the Conversions tab of Preferences). That way, you have speedy, reliable conversions combined with the ease of use of VideoDrive.

    You are right. I did a test with Handbrake which I already have, and found much better quality. Thanks for your updated reply. Whew. Glad I don't have to do this often.

    If you want a really reliable video converter there is Wondershare, you should get a 30 day free trial and the main programme won't break the bank, it will literally convert any format, I have used it for a while now and can't fault it!

    Apple's software really stupid. iTune can't import H264, so I used third party tool to import it. My iphone5s can play it. It turns out iphone supports it but itune can't import it.

    you're right. I have given up the try and figure out what videos do actually import in iTunes. Just use another tool and ignore it. Also, if you use a tool that simultaneously adds descriptions and covers, you're better of anyway. I'm very happy with the solution that VideoDrive brings.

    itunes stuck it honest look ugly and it has to many issues. I would say download outside software and put the video on there that way because apple is big headache

    Convert your movie with Handbrake. It will send the finished file to the "Home Videos" section of your Movie section in iTunes. There is a tab in the top center of that page that has 5 choices starting with "My Movies" - "Unwatched" - "Home Videos" - "Playlists" - "iTunes Store". Once you click on Home Videos, you will find your movie. Right click on that movie and select "Get info". From that window you will see 6 tabs of which one is "Options". The first line will be an option to change the "media kind". There is a drag down box to the right which has 6 choices. (Music Video,Movie,Home Video,TV Show, PodCast, iTunes U) Choose "Movie" and click "OK". Your Movie will now be located back in the "My Movies" tab in the Video Section of iTunes. Done. It takes longer to explain it than it does to right click and change the location.

     

    Now if you want to manually change the artwork thumbnail on that Movie you can also do that by right clicking the Movie and clicking on "Get info". From there click on the "Artwork" tab, where at the bottom of that window you will see a selection box that says "Add Artwork". If you wish to add your own thumbnail, as I did for a Concert Movie that I uploaded (It was mine as I had already purchased the DVD), then simply Google search the title and save a JPEG of the artwork you wish to use. Save it to a location your remember and then select it when you are asked after clicking "Add Artwork". Now your Movie is in the right place and you have a thumbnail that clearly identifies the movie instead of the opening screenshot that HandBrake offers.

     

    I travel a lot and like to watch my own movies on my own iPad and this works fairly easily once you are told these minor details. Now if Apple will just offer support for Blu-Ray. Hope this helps.

    When I upgraded to iTunes 12, my video cards weren't supported, so I disabled video in iTunes, upgrading to iTunes 12.1.1 which supports older video cards fixed my problem.

    Now if Apple will just offer support for Blu-Ray

     

    I fly fairly often. I've seen about three different people with portable Blu-ray players duct-taped to the bottom of their MacBooks !

    i've converted my film using handbrake and when attempting to add it to my library it disappeared like everyone else's. except when i tried searching for it in the film tab i couldn't find 'home videos'. the top of my toolbar only says:     my films      unwatched       playlist       itunes store. nothing else seems to be working and i cannot locate it in the library. do you have  any suggestions???

    I found a solution...(i'm on windows 7)

         Step 1: Go to the video you want to send to your device

         Step 2; Right click and click open with...

         Step 3: Find your itunes application and click ok

         Step 4: It should open and play in the itunes video player

         Step 5: Go to the itunes store and click home videos.    

         Step 6: You should see your video and go to your device (under movies)

         Step 7: Click sync and it should be on it

    Yes, this is annoying, but there is an easy fix that worked for me.  First, just check and see if your movie has in fact uploaded to Home Videos?  No? Okay, you can run the movie through HandBrake, this will solve the issue, but if it's an HD movie it will take a time but the quality is excellent. Or you can just open (don't play) the movie in QuickTime. Open File, and Export your movie from the list.  This should get you going...

    I've found that I can put videos in my library of them on iTunes, but there's no sound and a green bar appears under the video...

    I have no idea whether I'm on the right track but so far I have been able to get MP4's into itunes Movies and can go through the process of syncing and low and behold at least on my laptop (macbook air yosemite) I can see that they are supposedly on the iphone 6.  But where you find 'Movies' actually on the iphone 6 is a mystery.

     

    To get the files on to my computer I went to Movies on my device within Itunes.  I'm not entirely sure how I did this as I can't seem to repeat it.  But basically I got to Movies and then to playlists and then was able to drag and drop into Movies library, then drag and drop onto play list and somehow they all appeared in Movies.  After that I simply selected for sync and that was that. 

     

    However, I despite it showing that they're on my iphone, there is no app to actually play them so I'm a bit mystified.  Anyone know where this is on the iphone 6?

     

    The cheat's way is that I used the drop box app and then 'favourited' the movies so they sync to the phone.  You need lots of dropbox storage to do this though but it does work.
