Q: iTunes 12 will not allow movies to be added

Aug 14, 2015 8:59 AMby craig30,I've had the same problem of not being able to import/drag and drop into iTunes library. I used MacX DVD Ripper Pro to convert a non-copy-protected DVD to M4V and also MP4. Couldn't find anywhere in iTunes and not in Home Movies either (I learned this foible some time ago). I was, however, re-naming the output video file from DVDxx to something more friendly and eventually noticed that iTunes had some imports as DVDxx (the changed name wasn't close alphabetically so not obvious to spot). I tried Subler, as advised earlier in this forum, and obviously the filename but also the metadata wasn't brought across but it's possible that the use of Subler was enough to have triggered a change that at least imported something as I'd tried more times than were present under the DVDxx name!!!
Hope that may help some puzzled people.
In a separate issue, I have been unable to fully edit iTunes metadata using Get Info since iTunes 12, i.e it doesn't always save Genre or pasted Artwork - but using Subler has resolved this.

Aug 14, 2015 9:54 AMby Sonnybet,I didn't read this entire thread but this is my solution and it's very easy. Lets say you have a home video or something you got off of YouTube.
(1) Go to "Movies" in iTunes
(2) Select "My Movies"
(3) Drag and Drop file into this window (It won't appear here and it will act like nothing happened)
(4) Wait 30 seconds. Switch over to "Home Videos" and "magically" the video will appear in this window.
It's buggy but it works.

Nov 9, 2015 12:28 AMby Tomeranaray,When you're adding many videos to iTunes, and they are in different formats, you might consider installing a dedicated tool for it. There are several that do exactly that. VideoDrive is the one I use on OSX: it will take any video in any format and add it to iTunes. Simple as drag and drop. And it automatically adds metadata and artwork along the way. Very convenient when adding a whole TV show season at once.

Apr 26, 2016 11:39 PMby patrickj86,Thank you so much!!, i was searching everywhere in itunes and found it, I found the MP4 I added under Movies- Home Videos like you stated.....I did this on 4/27/16 using the latest version of itunes, so I guess any MP4s you download on your own (or rather they were not bought from itunes, you own them yourselves) are added to this section. Not sure if there is a way to change the default folder when you add a new MP4. Thanks again!

1. Right click on the video file and uncheck the read only in preferences.
2. Go into iTunes and hit EDIT then Preferences then hit Advanced and check Copy files to iTunes Media folder when adding to library.
P.S For me the home movies didn't show up in itunes but when i went to sync the phone they were there for that so at least you can put them on your phone now.

What? There is no “Preferences” when right clicking a video in either iTunes or in the Finder.

That would be menu iTunes (not edit) > Preferences - Advanced tab.
This simply does exactly what it says. It copies files to iTunes media folder when you add them to iTunes.

Since iTunes 12.5, anytime I try to add an mp4 or m4v into my library, it imports into Music, without a way to reclassify it as a Movie. At first I thought that they weren't importing at all, but then after some searching I found that they are actually importing but just being incorrectly identified.
Get Info > File even acknowledges / indicates that it is a MPEG-4 VIDEO file, and yet iTunes classifies it as Music without a way to change it. Aside from that, even attempting to play it as music (which I hoped would cause the player module to identify and play it) doesn't work. Every player I've used outside of iTunes and my AppleTV plays the file(s) fine.
So frustrating the way it seems that every-other version doesn't work, and now we seem to be on a "this one doesn't work" cycle.

It staggers me that Apple write such poor software. itunes 12 is by far the worst peice of software on the market today, clearly they are now employing after school children to write their software. It is staggeringly poor software. if there was an award for the worse piece of software ever written they would win every time.
Try importing photos from your iphone 7 that is a total joke. Here is what you have to do, when you have a number of new pictures you connect your iphone 7 and itunes starts up but cannot find any new pictures, you then have to take a picture while it is connected, then you remove it and reconnect it and itunes then recognises all the new pictures and down laods them. Did no one in Apple actually try to do this with a new iphone and new itunes. Their tech support is just as good as their software development, clearly the after school kids rotate from support to software development. i am starting think these might be junior school kids!
i like my iphone a lot it is the fourth one i have had but OMG the iOS and itunes is appalling. i was going to buy a MAC to replace my MS PC, but Apple make microsoft look good!
