Iphoto 09 and yosemite osx

I'm running maverick and iPhoto 09 (8.1.2 build 4.2.4). I have 2 photo libraries. (45GB and 28GB)

Thinking of upgrading to yosemite osx.

Tried to update the iPhoto to version 9.6 but it says "iPhoto can’t be installed on “Macintosh HD” because OS X version 10.10 or later is required."

Question:

- will my iPhoto version work if i just upgrade maverick to yosemite anyway? if it's not compatible, what do i need to do?

- I might buy a new macbook and configure a fresh setup, probably install an iPhoto build 9.6 while awaiting the new photos app for yosemite next year. If i do this, can i import the photo libraries that i have into the new iPhoto build 9.6 app?

iPhoto '09 will not run with Yosemite. Only version 9.6 is supported. So you will need to buy the iPhoto 9.6 upgrade.

Apple did not say much publicly about the new Photos.app, but all reported interviews confirm, that migration from iPhoto to the new Photos.app will be supported. We don't know however, if it will be possible to migrate iPhoto libraries from before iPhoto '11.

thanks leonie,

Think options i have at the moment is to do one of the following (since i can't update my iphoto 09 to 11 on maverick, it gives me an error saying that i need to install maverick first);

- upgrade my maverick to yosemite, install/buy iphoto 11. import library (from iphoto09) into the iphoto 11

- or just buy a new macbook, install iphoto 11 Import library (from iphoto09) into the iphoto 11

either way, i'll make sure i do a backup of the photo libraries to another external drive and make sure my time capsule is also backing up successfully first.

Upgraded to OS 10.10 and iphoto. I have eleven each external hard drives with over 600 iPhoto libraries. Many libraries are over 200 gb. Was told by Apple the iPhoto app will not show "recent libraries" opened till all my libraries have had their "permissions" repaired and then upgraded. These repairs and upgraded will take "forever." To see recent libraries I can use option key plus iPhoto key and it will search my external hard drive for my libraries - it will only display - stopped counting at end of "C" which was 78 libraries. I am using a neat application "iPhoto Library Manager" to search for duplicate photos.

The iPhoto app 9.6 will not open iPhoto libraries that are on an external hard drive formatted "ExFat." It gives this warning "The library could not be opened because the file system of the library's volume is unsupported. Quit" Copying the libraries to a volume formatted "Mac OS Extended (Journaled)" Hope this will let iPhoto open, repair and upgrade the libraries.

upgrade my maverick to yosemite, install/buy iphoto 11. import library (from iphoto09) into the iphoto 11

If you upgrade your system to Yosemite you can go to the App Store and purchase iPhoto 9.6. You will not import your old library into a new library. That's not how it's done. What you'll do is leave your old library in your Pictures folder and launch iPhoto 9.6 and let it convert the library to the new version. No importing is necessary.

If you purchase a new Mac again you don't import the old library into a new one. Just copy the library to the Pictures folder on the new Mac and open iPhoto and let it do its thing in converting.

Hi - I am in the same boat except I am still running OSX 10.7.5 (Lion). I would like to upgrade to Yosemite if I can (I had tried to the 1st day or so that it was released and kept getting errors, hopefully because the server was so busy but we'll see). I currently have iPhoto '09 (vers. 8.1.2).

Right now, if I go to the App store and try to download iPhoto (9.6) it give me the message "iPhoto 8.1.2 is already installed and was not purchased from the Mac App store; Do you want to buy iPhoto 9.6?" It doesn't tell me how much it costs though!

I want to be sure I understand, if I go ahead and successfully install Yosemite, I can THEN go and purchase this 9.6 version of iPhoto if I choose to and it will convert my photos?

I am also wondering about this new Photos app that will be out at some point and maybe I should just wait for that to be out before upgrading to Yosemite; I'm in no hurry, maybe then I won't have to pay for any upgrade to iPhoto at all?

If I backup & save my entire iPhoto library somewhere will I be able to import it elsewhere later? Or maybe I should just pick & choose what I want to save & store it all in Flickr or something like that? (I already have tons of these same photos in Dropbox)

Thanks for any advise/recommendations!

Yes.

I see a question mark but can't find a question there 😉

Sorry that one is not clear to me. You should have a back up anyway. What do you mean by 'elsewhere'?

Maybe...

Sorry if I was unclear! I'm sure no one really knows what this new "Photos" app will do just yet! I was just thinking that if it is going to replace iPhoto, maybe I don't need to bother purchasing a new version of iPhoto right now!

I think what I really need to do before anything else is go through all of my photos in iPhoto & organize/delete years worth of stuff that I've been holding onto that I either don't need, or have duplicates of in Dropbox!

New IPHOTO has detect missing face - does not work, while add a missing face worked on the older versions. Also, I can no longer expand a picture which may contain a individual; I can only confirm or not confirm. Still merging iPhoto libraries with iPhoto library Manager, but it take many hours with my very large libraries - all over 100 gb.

Thans for sharing - and do you have a helpful comment that relates in any way to this thread -

Hi Old Toad,

if I may digress...On a related note about moving a library, I find the iPhoto 9.5 instructions not providing the same results in 9.6. Wondering if you or anyone can help.

I tried to move my two libraries, one at a time via finder, from my system disk to a data disk, but it appears I have merely copied them, not moved them. I followed the apple support instructions for iPhoto 9.5. Here are the 9.5 instructions:

iPhoto 9.5: Move your iPhoto library to a new location

You can move your entire iPhoto library to a different computer, a hard disk, or another location on your computer.

Important: Before you move your iPhoto library, it’s a good idea to back it up to a DVD or external hard disk.

Move your iPhoto library

If you’ve created multiple photo libraries, be sure to move only the library currently displayed when iPhoto is open. To move a different library, you first need to switch to it.

  1. Quit iPhoto.
  2. In the Finder, choose your home folder (it’s usually named after you).
  3. Open the Pictures folder (in the home folder) to locate the iPhoto Library file. User uploaded file
  4. Drag the iPhoto Library file to a new location on your computer.
  5. Open iPhoto.
  6. In the window that appears, select the library you want, and then click Choose.
