Macbook Pro won't shut down after installing Yosemite

Hi,

I just finished installing Yosemite on my Macbook Pro. It's fairly new, the last version with a DVD drive but without retina display (I bought it in May 2014 and it's my first Mac).

I installed Yosemite, updated all my applications from the App Store and tried to shut it down from the Finder but the screen just freezes on a black screen wth the pointer showing and then I to shut it down using the power button which I hate doing.

I turned on FireVault after set up and that is busy encrypting could that be causing this? I did check online and it says you can put your Mac to sleep or shut it down while this is happening, but I haven't been able to. Any tips would be great.

MacBook Pro, OS X Yosemite (10.10)

I tried to use your log out method for a while. It seems to improve with this method but not completely. I still have the problem that I can't shut down my laptop. sometimes the screen is black with an eternal spinning wheel that just keeps spinning. No matter how long I wait. Then the only option is to force the machine to close down by keeping the power knob pressed.

Hello all

I've had the same problem as everyone on my MBP '12 where after countless disk repairs and permission checks my laptop would not shut down correctly. I don't now if this would fix everyones but i have a SATA drive as the primary and use the trim software to govern the SATA drive. I was messing around with settings and one setting I switched off is the ability for hibernation mode. Since then even when I leave in it sleep mode and not let it go to hibernation the MBP has been behaving and shutdown without a problem.

Just food for thought so good luck to all.

Hi Mrgreetham,

I am not quite sure what you mean with 'I have a SATA drive'. It does not say anything about the kind of drive you have. A SATA drive can be HDD or SSD. From the fact that you say that you use TRIM software I presume that you have a SSD.

From the problem that you describe with disc repair I would advice you to leave your computer running for 12 or 24 hours. Without touching is. Or leave it running for a few nights in a row without touching it. Your trim software (I hope you use the apple trim) needs to perform garbage collection and starts to do so when you do not use your computer for about 20 mins. So after that the trim starts to work. To have it complete it's work let our computer run while you don't use it.

I am not sure what hibernation has to do with the problems that you describe.

Well it is not MBP related..I have just done a bare bones clean instal of 10.10.4 on a Mac pro 08 3,1machine

No Migration assistant, all fresh instal of everything

Worked fine for a while and now ge the Black screen and cusor.

No login items

No File Vault EVER

It seems it does eventually shut down, but no Idea how long it takes. I left it , and it was eventually ff a few hours later.

Tried the PRAM resets, Disk Utility verify and repair etc

Tried everything on here, but nothign fixes it, not even any third party software yet. A mac bug, no question

I have a fix for this (at least it works for me). Its not ideal but it fixes the problem for now.

I have always used family photos as my desktop background. Until recently I was using images from iPhoto and never had an issue. Ever since switching from iPhoto to Photos I noticed an intermittent shut down problem. Took me a long time but I finally have confirmed that if you are using images from Photos for your desktop wallpaper then you may have the shut down problem. Unfortunately, that means I am now using the Apple stock image for my desktop but at least I can shut my computer down.

PS- this is only happening on my newest iMac (late 2014). I have two macbook pros (one 2010 and one 2014) and an older iMac 2010 (all with the latest OS) that seem to be unaffected.

hello all

i've had this issue too and tried all the suggested solutions. the one that (fingers crossed) seems to be working is disconnecting from my studio network regularly and and disconnecting everything before shutdown.

last night i tried to disconnect my network at the end of the day and the os completely locked up so today i am logging in, copying my files and disconnecting immediately. this seems to be working and a few restarts have worked without any hanging.

not ideal but a workaround. fingers crossed thats me sorted

I am replying to myself because I have found some information in relation to my post after a lot of trial and error. The shut down issue is not just related to the desktop background... Any time I use Photos my mac will not properly shut down. Even if I quit Photos first.

In some cases the screen goes black and I get the spinning wheel and it never shuts off (thus I must hold down the power button). In other instances the dock and desktop items go away, the screen dims and it eventually shuts off. If I restart my computer and DO NOT use Photos then the computer will shut down ok every time. If I open Photos, I have shut down problems each time. This happens no matter how long I go between shut downs, whether its a quick restart and shut down or if the computer was on for 3-4 days. No matter what , the constant offender is Photos.

No solution here. Maxed-out Mini which came with Mavericks, upgraded to Yosemite when that came out.

I've always shut down on Friday, end of workday. I've never used File Vault and repairing disks and permissions has no affect.

The only way I can shut down without powering off is right after a cold start. In other words, I log off, try to shut down (or restart). It hangs (for days, if I let it). So I hold the power button in, till it powers off. Then I start up. Once it starts up, it can be shut down properly, with or without logging off first.

As you can imagine, this is probably something that gets going later and won't let go. So it can only be shut down before that evil thingy gets launched.

I'm using the latest versions of Creative Cloud, Office and Fusion. Nothing else that I know of. I manually turn them all off before attempting shut down.

The Mini I have at home has no such problems, by the way. The two major differences would probably be the Windows network and Fiery printers here in the office.

I now return you to your regularly scheduled frustration.

I can confirm that clearing the Cache files (i.e. deleting them) in the Library folder fixed my issue. Dexguitar's recommendation of "solving the problem with shutdown after simply going to "Finder ---> Go ---> push "alt" ---> Library ----> Caches" and cleaning up ALL THE FILES" has worked.
I have a 2010 Mac Pro 5, 1 with a fresh clean install of 10.10.5 Yosemite with all of the updates. Nothing else was installed. After the 10.10.4 update to 10.10.5 my system would not shut down or restart. It would close out everything and go to the black screen with the mouse pointer and just sit there. Very frustrating as I have been chasing this issue for quite a while. I had reinstalled Yosemite multiple times and even gave up on doing a system migration from my old Mac due to this problem. I have no idea what is going on, but I can assume it has something to do with the Cache someway.

In the Cache folder in the Library, I saw (at least on my machine) a couple of files related to the desktop wallpaper from the few times I tried that suggestion. So maybe there is something related to what's being written into this Cache folder that is getting corrupted or messed up that is causing the shut down issue.

Others should give that a try and see if it resolves the issue.

Welp, it seems that this was only a temporary fix. After a few shut down / restart cycles the issue is back. Go to shut down and after everything closes I get the black screen with the mouse pointer.

The part of this that just frustrates me is that my Mac Pro is a clean, fresh system built straight to 10.10.5 with no other software installed and I STILL GET THIS!!! I am at a loss. Apple, fix this! There are no kext files, programs, or other such things on my Mac Pro 5, 1 other than a clean install of Yosemite 10.10.5 and yet I get this issue too.

Thank you, HR. I had already given up troubleshooting this, but can confirm that unmounting my FireWire 800 drives before a reboot solves the hanging issue. Like many other people on this thread, logging out before rebooting also works for me.

It seems that there might be multiple factors for people's issues at play here and we don't all necessary have the same problem, but for me it's definitely connected to my FireWire drives.
