Mail index damaged after yosemite upgrade

I have the same thing going on after updating from Snow Leopard that was working like a dream. I pulled the Mail Accounts.plist from mail library to desk top but it looks like a short cut of the real thing and I also pulled to desk top, com.apple.MailMigratiorService.plist just in case that would help, but nothing doing just the same rounds. I'll keep these two files handy until Apple comes up how to fix the mail import after upgrade to Yosemite.

I woud re create all the Email accounts if only I could access the program. Wish Apple had a stand alone down load for Apple E Mail and Icould just trash the dysfunctional application.

I took my iMac 24 in yesterday to the apple store. For some reason she said she didn't have any people "yet" with this problem, but it appears to be happening from what I have read on this board.

She ended up going in thru the library and did not explain how to get there, she said it was cloaked and hard to find, not my normal library. She helped me get it all set up. We had to create new mailboxes and then she moved all the info into them. I did not loose any of my emails or email folders created. There was no charge at the Genius bar which i made my appointment online on the apple.com website.

My mid 2007 IMAC 24 is now converted to the 10.10 Yosemite and working ok. I was able to download other drivers to my other applications such as Dreamweaver and iPhoto to update by myself.

I was able to solve the problem. I had 20000+ e-mails for five different e-mails sorted in many boxes that I located in the Library and deleted years 2007 through 2010 to lighten the sorting load on this marvelous machine. Sure enough my e mails were all preserved plus Time capsule had everything backed up as well.

I am certain great care was taken by Mac to safeguard (cloaked) our records despite some of the heavy deleting I did.

From what I read this morning the Download is very troublesome especially on WI FI and heavy traffic. I actually re Downloaded

Yosemite by Direct Cable connection just in case something got interrupted and perhaps caused the corrupt message related to the e-mails. What really persuaded me for the Re-Down load was the prompt on the Application reminder to update and Down load, which I found confusing since I thought I was finished and running already.

All is working well I am glad we upgraded our machines. I love the Leopards for the desktop but I wish I could also have the starry night that my husband has on his Mac-Air.

I would have gladly gone to an Apple Store but the nearest one is 100 miles away.

I have the same problem migrating from Snow Leopard. After some tries without success I installed Mozilla Thunderbird and imported all the mails from apple mail. It works perfect and Thunderbird is even better then the apple email.

How does one know if this is a "known" problem that Apple is working on ?

And, if they are working on it, when to expect a result ?

I have the same exact problem. I'm upgrading my wife's computer to Yosemite. Everything more or less going smoothly except for the mail "index has been damaged". Really? Was it ok in the previous OS somehow? I am upgrading from 10.6.8, so that may be part of the problem - probably not a common jump. MacMini3,1.

Ok, this was a bit of a sledgehammer, but here is what I did. The idea was that the indexes were corrupted, so delete them and let Yosemite rebuild the indexes without being confused by the existing indexes. As you may know, the mail data is in ~/Library/Mail. So, I made a copy to ~/Library/MailBackup as I experimented with different options. "Envelope Index-*" are built by the import, and increase with every failed attempt, so certainly they could be deleted. I deleted every *.plist, presuming Mail would rebuild them. Ditto *.backup. AvailableFeeds, DefaultCounts, Metadata, RSS, *.noindex were deleted on general principles.

The real problem I suspect was in *.mbox, which was the old Mail format. Our mail when we checked it in 10.6.8 had some blank emails (who checks 4 year old emails for integrity?...). Where did they go? Who knows, but I suspect that was the real problem. So, I deleted *.mbox. Now restarted Mail, and the import worked this time. We lost a few emails from 4 years ago, which was probably when we made the last transition.

I also have the same problem. Get your act together Apple. This is supposed to be a straight forward upgrade of OS. The only solution seems to be taking my large iMac to the Apple store which is 30 minutes away...

I removed all .mbox files of the library (the library within the user account not that of the systemmap). Computer/ users/ thisuser/ library/ mail

If you don't see the library use the checkbox in the View dropdown of the finder menu: show view option: show library. The library map in your directory is shown. In this map a mail map is shown. Just put all .mbox files in the trashcan and startup mail.

This works fine for me.

Apple doesn’t routinely monitor the discussions. These are mostly user to user discussions.

Send Apple feedback. They won't answer, but at least will know there is a problem. If enough people send feedback, it may get the problem solved sooner.

Try re-indexing the mailboxes. This can take awhile if you have a lot of mail.

Reindex messages Mavericks/Yosemite

Mine is totally porked. I tried deleting the Envelope index files and reimporting the mailboxes, but it stalled on import and now all it does when I try to open the program is become unresponsive. I can see greyed out and unselectable the mail boxes with unread mail, but when I click on one, I get the spinning beachball of death.
