OS X Yosemite - sound problems?

I just downloaded Yosemite to my MacBook Pro 15" retina laptop. And it seems to be just fine, until I try to run graphics or video. I begin to get random popping sound from the right speaker of the laptop. It is quite bad when you start World of Warcraft but also is present when Safari loads up web video or audio. It seems to be around 1-4 Hz in frequency. It is pretty annoying. Any ideas on what that might be from?

Hi bugsortega,

Welcome to the Apple Support Community!

I understand that random sound issues can be frustrating. One thing I would suggest in this situation would be resetting the computer’s PRAM. Please use the attached article for information on resetting the computer’s PRAM. The article is for OS X Mavericks, but he steps are the same for OS X Yosemite.

No third party music drivers that I know of. I have the new Yosemite version of iTunes loaded but don't use it that much. I notice that the staticky scratchy sounding output comes only with Safari and video online. Not sure if it is a Flash plug in issue, or what. It seems to be worse when logged into and playing World of Warcraft. So I don't know enough about it to even hazard a guess. Just know that it is really, really, annoying. :-0

In the terminal, type that:

sudo killall coreaudiod

And in the sound preferences, make sure your internal speakers (and not HDMI or other device) is selected.

This should resolve the issue, did it for me.

I had problems with audio sync on every video I tried. (locally played, youtube, etc) It starts with about a two second lag, and may get as bad as 7 seconds!

In a seemingly unrelated problem, If I tried to save a photo out of a browser, download an app, etc.. The access to disks was dog slow.

Further, I had the well known Wifi problem reported all over the web.

These problems persisted even after the latest update to 10.10.1

I have an SSD with Yosemite on it, but I had recently CCCd from a spinning mac drive which was Mavericks. Then I updated the SSD to Yosemite.

As a Sanity check, I rebooted from the old spinning mac drive into Mavericks, and just like magic, my chronic problems disappeared! All of them!

I have since CCCd the SSD back to Mavericks, and my Mac Mini is now lightning fast... no exaggeration.

In my opinion, this is a software-hardware interface or I/O software issue, which affects all devices: Wifi, HDD, Sound, Video, Bluetooth, and anything else you may have attached. I also feel that this “fix” will be a long time coming due to its far-reaching nature.

Let me know if there is a fix, till then, Ill stick with Mavericks.
