Why do I have to pay for iMovie on iOS 8??

my friend has an iPhone 5c and she recently updated her software to ios 8 and she got iMovie to download for free; I hover have an iphone 5 and when I updated my iOS and tried to download iOS 8 it told me I had to pay £2.99 why is this??
