Q: MacBook performance at rock bottom after Yosemite update

Macbook Pro 15" (Late 2011). Updated to Yosemite on public release date a few days ago.

Worked fine for 2 days now it takes approximately 30 seconds to register each click I make.

Things I managed to do before it lagged, update to Java version 8, browse the web, use Word, use messages.

Then it randomly started to lag. Things I did to try and fix:

Repair disk permissions,

Reset SMC,

Erase free space on HDD,

Shut down and restart multiple times.

None have worked. I've just had a look at FileVault and its hanging on, "estimated time remaining" with no spinning wheel or anything. Can't turn Filevault off, as it tells me to wait until it has finished encrypting. However it doesn't seem to be doing anything and the system fans and HDD arn't spinning round fast enough to make an evident noise of them working hard encrypting.

Yosemite worked great for 2 days, I can't think why it would just turn all laggy for no reason. I'm thinking possibly FileVault is slowing it down loads, or Java 8 update has done something.

Please help!

Other details:

16GB RAM.

I use my MacBook everyday with no problems. I have owned it for almost 3 years.

129GB of free storage space.

MacBook Pro (15-inch Late 2011), OS X Yosemite (10.10)

hi, i managed to turn fire vault off, you need to click on lock enter password turn off it then takes a while then you need to click on lock again and enter password then it turns off, i did this last night and it does seem faster now just waiting to see if wifi or bluetooth turns off, but it was ok last night and so far this morning  fingers crossed, i think it might be a bug in fire fault messing everything up, hope this helps someone.

I've had the same SLOW performance on my Mid-2010 13" MacBook Pro, upgrading from Mavericks.
I do not understand why. File Vault is NOT on. I know it's an old 2.4ghz Core 2 Duo, but a couple years back I upgraded it to 8GB Ram and runs a 256GB SSD (Crucial M4). Switching between apps is super slow, as is Safari. Slow opening Mission Control, App Expose, Launch Pad and Showing Desktop....all this via trackpad gestures.

My other machine, a Mid-2011 15" Macbook Pro, I did a clean install of Yosemite onto the 500GB SSD (Samsung 840 evo), is much smoother and responds very quickly--even with File Vault on.

    Hi there

I have the same problem. I have an iMac 27" mid 2011, 1TB and 4GB RAM.

I activated FileVault like about a week ago (tumblr_n9ta18BEc91qkrbwgo1_400.gif) and it remains in this phase until now. I have restarted it several times by pressing the On/Off power button because at first it took forever to responde due to I had several programs opened.

Once I could close all that programs I was able to see the status of it and it is in 3/8 of the progress and is "Estimating time remaining".

I have tried to deactivate FileVault encryption but it is not possible until the encryption is finished.

I also have the disks running all the time and the screen does not "rest" until 3 hours passed.

Sorry for my english, it is not my native language and hope the gif does not bother you. But it is for real, it has more than a week that I turned on FileVault.

Send Apple feedback. They won't answer, but at least will know there is a problem. If enough people send feedback, it may get the problem solved sooner.

I've seen this bootup hang on a few upgraded machines so far, and in most cases, zapping the PRAM returned the machines to "normal" boot speed.

    Power off your machine

    wait a few seconds

    power the machine back on

immediately AFTER the boot chime, hold down command+option+p+r (four keys)

continue to hold the keys down until you hear 3 additional boot chimes

    release the keys.

In most traditional hard drive cases, bootup should take about 1 to 3 minutes. The one machine I timed after performing this operation was then able to bootup in just over a minute.

    Hi Michael,

First of all thanks for your help.

I just did what you suggested and it did not change at all. The Mac still runs slow and the same phrase "Estimating remaining time" is frozen.

But once again, thanks for your help.

    Cheers.

Did you have a problem with the downgrade?

    Hi Ross!

Just found this solution from another forum. I just tried and it worked, now mi iMac is in the decrypting process with 2 hours of remaining time to be completed. It is running as fast as usual.

Hope it will be helpful for all of you, cheers!

"i have had a similar issue...FileVault stuck after upgrading to OS X Yosemite.

    here is a simple solution.

    - Shut down your macbook

    - Hold cmd+R on the keyboard and turn on the laptop (Keep the keys held down)

    - Click on 'Utilities' or 'Disk utilities'

    - In the left column you should see Macintosh HD and underneath again Macintosh HD but greyed out

    - Click on the greyed out one

    - On the top bar you should see: Verify, Info... click on Unlock and enter the password your were asked to make for FileVault

    - Next click on File at the very top and you should see 'Turn off encryption' .. click it.

    - You will have to enter your password once again.

    - Either a progress bar will appear and if not restart your macbook as usual.. log in and go to system preference, security and Privacy, FileVault and hopefully it should be decrypting and giving you an estimated time which decreases very quickly. Hopefully this helps! it did for me and i recieved these instruction from apple on the phone about 10 minutes ago."

I must be in the minority. I just upgraded my Macbook Pro mid-2010 with a Crucial 256GB SSD and brought it up to 8GB RAM, also Crucial. The next day, I upgraded to Yosemite. My computer has never been happier or faster. There is hope!

My daughter has the same issue with a 2007 iMac.  Old, I know but it had no problem with Mavericks.

I am not sure if there is a back up, so I don't think a downgrade is possible.

I will ask her to try the CMD-R process to see if it works.
