Can't access Airport Extreme after Yosemite install.

I can't access my airport extreme in finder after installing Yosemite.

I have a portable HDD connected to it, and I could access files from it before installing Yosemite.
Trying to access from a brand new Macbook Pro Retina and a Macbook Air mid 2013, both with Yosemite installed.

The Airport extreme is the latest model with version # 7.3.3

When trying to connect in (with password) finder I get a message saying that the version of the server I am trying to connect to is not supported, contact the system administrator.

I tried resetting the router, and setting up a new network, but same results.

Hope someone can help, thanks.

I have had the same problem after updating to Yosemite 10.10.1.

If I do a ping for my airport I get what appears to be a self-assigned IP address returned: 192.168.1.254

I tried the following workaround - extreme is my airport extreme device name:

I entered the IP Address for extreme.local and extreme in /etc/hosts.

192.168.1.254 extreme extreme.local

I then used finder "Connect to Server" and connected to smb://extreme

This worked.

This is not an ideal work around but it seems to be a crude patch to the problem which probably points to an issue with Bonjour and networking.

The IP you mention is not self-assigned. It's just a non-routable IP address that home wifi routers give to machines that are connected to them via Wifi.

If you see an IP like this: 172.16.x.x, that is self-assigned.

I'm getting the same problem too. Firewall is off, and so is Wake on Lan (although, I don't see how this last setting would fix the problem).

My feeling is Yosemite uses different Unix file permissions, and those aren't lining up with whatever permissions are on the shared volume.

Or, they're not propagated through AFP://

I think if you directly connect the USB drive to your 10.10 mac, you should see your files again. I will check this later.

Hello everyone, I see I'm not alone with this issue 🙂

To make it clear: it came with 10.10.1 update. Before everything was working fine. And it's Yosemite's fault for sure because the problem happens only on my MacBook Pro and my girlfriend's MacBook Pro. AirPort utility and Time Capsule access work fine with iPad and iPhone.

I tried to delete all Passwords related to AirPort and Time Capsule in my Keychain, then I reset Time Capsule to factory settings, same issue.

Sometimes Time Capsule is green in AirPort Utility and I'm able to access the disk in the finder. And sometimes (although visible) it's grey in AirPort Utility and unable to connect from the finder. The problem seems to happen randomly. Sometimes I can access it, sometimes I can't.

I noticed that the Time Machine Backups are working well, even when my MacBook Pro is in sleep mode with power nap.

I tried the suggestion to turn off "Back to my Mac" both in my iCloud account and in Time Capsule settings. It seems to have solved it from this morning and it's almost 6PM here (Paris Time). And while writing I'm checking my AirPort Utility from my Mac: Time Capsule is Green.

I guess we will have to wait for an update from Yosemite or Time Capsule firmware. Who knows...

Thanks! This worked for me first time..

- Airport utility showed a green light next to internet, but only a loading spinner where the AP bas station should be

- With AP Utility open, I switched Wifi off, then on again

The Base station appeared immediately, and I can now access my remote disks!

Many thanks

PS, I notice that Firewall was off when I did this. I've switched it on since, and I still have access to the Base Station and it's attached drives.

Disabled wake-from-sleep for network access, and my hdd access for time machine backups on a "wired" airport base station extreme began working again. This only impacted my mini with 10.10.1, and not an my old imac on 10.7.5 (yes, i know, both using the same usb hdd on airport extreme for time machine is not recommended, but I have been doing for years, and it always works\restores without issues.. until 10.10.1..., even though I really only needed a restores 2-3 times... they worked, so I keep doing it this way). Disabled wake-from-sleep for network access on mac's using 10.10.1, reboot, celebrate.

I read all of this and here's what worked for me:

1. "discoveryd" was blocked in Advanced Firewall. I unblocked it.

2. "Stealth Mode" was checked in Advanced Firewall. I unchecked it.

Suddenly, I would see my (older) Airport Extreme Base Station/Time Capsule, as well as the two USB attached Time Capsule drives.

I rebooted the Time Capsule, but it wasn't necessary, nor was rebooting my MacBook Air.

The Advanced Firewall setting changes above did the trick immediately, not reboots needed.

This mess had me stumped for months.

I've been following all these posts. My trouble be an with Yosemite as well. IntermittentLyn lost contact with my Canon 922 printer and over time realized it wasn't the printer itself. Couldn't see the Airport Expreme with airport utility from my Mac but could from my iPad and iPhone however couldn't airpri from them! Rebooting any of these devices were only a temporary fix with the problem recurring in a variable way. What seems to have fixed it was going to firewall settings and explicitly adding permission for Bonjour and the Airport utility. All problems have disappeared. Keeping my fingers crossed to see if a durable fix. Thanks to everyone's suggestions.

Don't know if this helps , but after the Yosemite update i couldn't 'see' my airport extreme base station in airport utility on my MacBook Pro, but was able to connect wirelessly to the internet. Read with interest all these suggestions, none helped. Finally noticed that under sharing I had checked 'share screen', for no reason i could remember. After I unchecked it, i was now able to see my base station. Very strange. Hope this helps someone.

I have had Yosemite since it came out, and I recently bought an airport extreme (my first Apple router). I had some trouble getting it to recognize my Canon printer, but setting a static IP fixed that. Everything seems to be fine. All of a sudden, 2 weeks later, my 2 external network hard drives will not show up in finder, although other devices - Sony Bluray player, iPhone - still access them. Tried resetting, reinstalling, etc., etc. Finally, merely disabling wake for network access seems to have worked. Bizarre, especially since they had all worked fine for some time until yesterday. Thanks for digging.
