After only a few days of using my black macbook, some keys started to become shiny. I thought at first that this was a problem due to grease, but on closer inspection and a bit of cleaning, I realised that it is a matte coating that is wearing off.
Has anybody else experienced this problem, or approached Apple about this?
It seems that over time, all my keyboards become shiny. So do my trackpads. It's just normal wear I'm afraid. It seems that my Macbook is holding up as well, if not better, than my old Dell.
There are a few companies which offer key protectors, soft rubber mats that go over all the keys. I've never used one, but perhaps this would solve your problem if it really bothers you. Personally, another layer over my keys would bother me more than the worn look.
I agree. my blackbook too has the same wear in certain spots on the keys trackpad and space bar. but i have a feeling an extra layer of protection would eventually start to peel off corners as i use my computer daily for hours on end, and it would look much worse that a few semi-glossy areas. look on the bright side, at least the display doesn't have big dark splotches on it.
I would really caution against the use of any keyboard protection of any kind as the macbooks display is relatively easy to scratch and adding height to the keyboard will surely result in a marred screen. If you look closely, you will see that the keyboard is extremely close to the screen when the macbook is closed.
My BlackBook has the same problems. I took it back to my Apple store and was told that it was "normal" (after a few weeks?) and I should try washing my hands more often. Thanks for the hygiene advice, Apple. My first computer was a Kaypro 486 so I have seen my fair share of computers, and the cosmetic appearance of my baby MacBook is very disappointing. Mama is not happy.
No but I've certainly had a number of Apple keyboards with black keys. They're going to get shiny any way you slice it. If you hold your head at just the right angle with some good lighting you can see the same thing happening to white keys as well. 'Tis ganz normal..
