My iPad won't update to ios8. I keep getting an error box that says the disk is full, but I have a little over 8Gb available. If I try to do it directly on the ipad, I still get a space availability error.

Try powering down and restarting. Sometimes that helps. There are more intensive solutions, but easy things first ... :-) ...
I have tired after powering down, and even a hard reset with the same result.
The iPad doesn't have a disk to become full. The message is probably telling you the computer's hard disk is full. Explore.
I have the same problem. My computer has 150 G free space so that can't be the problem. Right now I can't access my iPad at all. It won't restore to factory settings or do anything. I thought an iPad was a good choice. Right now I'm not sure.
