Q: iPhoto won't upgrade in Yosemite

I've just updated to OS X Yosemite on my iMac (27-inch, mid 2010 model). I was running 10.6.8 and everything was working fine.

iPhoto is version 9.2.3 and iMovie is version 9.0.4. The App Store won't let me upgrade these apps. I've tried opening from the dock and also the icon in the applications folder. I get the following messages when I try to open iPhoto:

1_iPhoto message from applications.png

Then when I click on the Search App Store button I get the following message when trying to download the latest version.

2_Message when trying to download.png

What can I do to fix this. I want to be able to access my photos. Thank you.

iMac, OS X Yosemite (10.10), Was operating 10.6.8

Followed the steps mentioned at http://appuals.com/upgrading-iphoto-yosemite/ and it did the job without any issues.

Well if you read the thread you'll see that this is for folks who have difficulty with that process.

I kept getting the message "application is not available on the US App Store". When I looked in the app store under "purchases" it showed iPhoto but only option was "upgrade", which did nothing.

I had to do what others have suggested - take iPhoto out of my applications folder and drag it into the trash. Restarted, then went back to App Store and under "purchases" it now showed iPhoto with "install" option. I'm just installed it and now working perfectly again.

    Most Simple Back Up:

Drag the iPhoto Library from your Pictures Folder to another Disk. This will make a copy on that disk.

Slightly more complex: Use an app that will do incremental back ups. This is a very good way to work. The first time you run the back up the app will make a complete copy of the Library. Thereafter it will update the back up with the changes you have made. That makes subsequent back ups much faster. Many of these apps also have scheduling capabilities: So set it up and it will do the back up automatically.

Example of such apps: Chronosync - but there are many others. Search on MacUpdate or the App Store

    Reappear? Not likely

If you do not like the software then the answer is very snoop - do not use it - use something you like

And if you want to solve a problem then start a new threat rather than thread jack an old one - and include specifies of  your system and your problem

Also iPhoto is leaving and being replaced with what is called just Photos

    Toaster Man is on target.

"Also iPhoto is leaving and being replaced with what is called just Photos"

There is NO NEED to replace, reinstall iPhoto. Just Go ahead and delete iPhoto from the Applications folder.

Photos takes over the functions of iPhoto to do simple editing e.g. cropping, enhancing etc.

Instead of prompting us to upgrade  iPhoto after we install Photos in Yosemite and then telling us that upgrading of iPhoto is not available thus frustrating thousands ( and throwing me into panic because I am preparing a lecture where I need to tweak my images), Apple should have just prompted "Photos is replacing iPhoto" .

I was just about to reinstall iPhoto from my Timeline when I found out as I surfed frantically across the Net.

So I have deleted iPhotos and am now using Photos to do all the things I used iPhoto for.

YOU DON'T NEED TO DO ABSOLUTELY ANYTHING. THE YOSEMITE UPDATE COMES WITH THE IPHOTO UPGRADE CALLED SIMPLY "PHOTOS", ONCE YOU START IT YOU WILL SEE HOW IT KEEPS THE OLD IPHOTO STORAGE BUT WITH A NEW FORMAT.

FORGET ALL THE OTHER ANSWERS AND ANY IDEA OF NEEDING TO INSTALL OTHER THINGS. IT ALL COMES TOGETHER WITH YOSEMITE.

You didn't need to do that, didn't you see the Photo icon? it's the replacement of iPhoto already integrated with Yosemite.

I get the following messages when I try to open iPhoto:  cancel or search app store  Then i go into the app store and it says 'Item not available. The item you requested is not currently available in the Australian Store??

so is Iphoto is not available in the app store anymore? Where can I find Iphoto so i can view my pictures ..  I have done the right click thing and it always sends me back to the app store. I then tried to locate it in the purchases list but not there either (hidden or not)???

Okay, I have the same issue, so I deleted iphoto from my applications, then opened the app store to re-install...and i cant find it anywhere. I searched iphoto and everything. Freaking out a little bit because I already deleted it.

I had the same problem. I checked for upgrades in the App store and found one for Yosemite. This installs Photo, which is the same program as on iPhone.
