Q: iPhoto won't upgrade in Yosemite

I've just updated to OS X Yosemite on my iMac (27-inch, mid 2010 model). I was running 10.6.8 and everything was working fine.

iPhoto is version 9.2.3 and iMovie is version 9.0.4. The App Store won't let me upgrade these apps. I've tried opening from the dock and also the icon in the applications folder. I get the following messages when I try to open iPhoto:

1_iPhoto message from applications.png

Then when I click on the Search App Store button I get the following message when trying to download the latest version.

2_Message when trying to download.png

What can I do to fix this. I want to be able to access my photos. Thank you.

iMac, OS X Yosemite (10.10), Was operating 10.6.8

But how do you backup to time machine, when you can't open iPhoto? Cuz I have the very same question.

You can't back up your iPhoto Library when iPhoto is open, so just run your time machine as normal.

Another problem. When I roll onto my photos, so all pictures as they should in miniature, BUT one day I first approximately 600 pictures from my photo, and then about 175 from my wife photo. The images have lain down on top of each other so that miniature pictures show one picture but when you open it there will be a completely different picture ( uploade from same day). Same problem in the new program. And same problem when I look picture from the past 12 months or photos. Hope it is understandable, whit help from google translate

Back Up and try rebuild the library: hold down the command and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild. Include the option to rebuild the thumbnails. It can take 3 or 4 goes for this to work

iphoto is not a Yosemite app

    Photos is the replacement

Go to the finder and trash iphoto

Quit and reopen the app store.

There's no such things as a "Yosemite app", iPhoto runs on both Yosemite and El Capitan.

Photos is a different app with different aims and purposes. It's not a replacement.

As of April 8, 2015, Apple discontinued and removed iPhoto from the Mac App Store with the release of the new Photos app bundled with OS X Yosemite 10.10.3.

Well if you want to be picky:

    You said

iphoto is not a Yosemite app

This is untrue, and I said

There's no such things as a "Yosemite app", iPhoto runs on both Yosemite and El Capitan.

which gives two reasons why what you said was untrue.

    Photos is the replacement

This is untrue. As I said

Photos is a different app with different aims and purposes

So, while it covers some of the same territory as iPhoto, it is not a direct replacement for it. It has, as I said, different aims and purposes.

What's even more interesting is the sentence you quote from Wikipedia.

    1. It has nothing whatever to say on the question of "Yosemite apps" (whatever they might be) or "replacements", so I'm not sure why you quote it and

    2. Its inaccurate. Apple stopped selling iPhoto but they did not remove it from the App Store, and it is available as an update from there for folks who already own iPhoto.

    It's a different thing.

    Help!
Over the past few days Ive seen there was an update for iPhoto but I could never update it, I saw the same error as described in the OP.

So a few mins ago i decided to see if i could fix the issue in the same way the OP did.

I deleted the iPhoto app in the launchpad area and noticed straight away that the update disappeared from the app store.

The problem is iPhoto cannot be found at all in the app store anymore. So now i have no app at all, can anyone help with this?

I would take iPhoto out of trash as I was able to download the update 9.6.1 just now!  It became available all of a sudden after the most recent Yosemite update.  I didn't buy it through the app store but from a cd when I got my iMac.   It never appeared in purchased for me.

Too late unfortunately, however I got the app back using time machine

I just tried to update again but I get the error "Update Unavailable with this Apple ID". The update is listed as version 9.6.1 which seems a bit old to me
