MBP Yosemite Custom resolutions?
What I'd like to know is if there is a way for me to input custom, non native resolution to my mac to down sample/ down scaling ?

Try holding down the OPTION key when in the DISPLAY preferences, then click the newly available DETECT DISPLAYS button. Worked on my Mac Mini with Acer AL1714 - before doing this I was given a range of resolutions that was not the 1280x1024x75hz that the monitor runs native.
