I get a "scanner won't initialize" error message when I try to scan.
Printing works fine.
hp don't seem to list the unit for driver support.
Any suggestions?

Try Applications/Image Capture to see if it will scan. Have you tried restarting the printer?
Have you tried the latest driver download.
