Gmail threatening to drop Safari 10.5.8 support

Hello,

I've got an emac running 10.5.8 and Gmail has just started sending me

messages saying the following :

This version of Safari is no longer supported. Please upgrade to asupported browser. Dismiss

The supported browsers are Chrome, IE, Firefox and Safari

The problem is that I have the latest compatible Safari already, Version 5.0.6 (5533.22.3)

that is accepted by my emac and all the other browsers that Gmail supports do

not accept OSX 10.5.8, they only accept the later Intel OSX machines.

I pretty much only use my emac for Gmail.

Is there anything I can do to prevent my emac being dropped by Gmail?

What will happen if I don't do anything, will my Gmail simply not open one day?

That would mean the end of my 9 year old emac that still runs like a

Swiss watch 😟

Such a waste.

emac, Mac OS X (10.5.1)

You'll be able to keep using Gmail, but many of its features will eventually disappear.

Consider using TenFourFox ( http://www.floodgap.com/software/tenfourfox/ ). I now have it on all our PPC Macs that I still use. It is a newer version of FireFox adapted to PPC that websites see as a recent version of FF. This browser is keeping our old Mac on the web.

Note: Any version of TFF later than v17 will not support plug-ins. All versions will run most FireFox add-ons, however, which is handy.

Some of the oldest browsers for PPC Macs will still work OK

with Google Mail. However the Gmail pages may load in a

reduced 'plain view' by default, since they can detect an old

browser. If you have, say Camino 2.12, this will load Gmail

in an almost plain text looking page. With older browsers

than your Safari 5.0.6 for Leopard. Old Opera, SeaMonkey

for PPC and earlier versions iCab, this may also happen.

If you use old browsers, be sure the flash & java are disabled.

You can use iCab 5.1.1, and choose Identify browser as Safari 6.

Then gmail doesn't ask that you upgrade to unsupported browsers.

Of course for most use without flash or java, the TenFourFox 31.2.0

works very well. Some pages run animations in HTML5 by default.

Since I have several older Macs; each has been 4 and 6 browsers.

And my only email is through gmail accounts... and I still use the

Gmail Notifier, with the notify section turned off. Then I can still have

a browser launch (the default system, set that from Safari preference)

just for my Gmail. Separate from my usual daily browser, so these

do not complicate my online use.

With early vintage MacBook intel machines, they also find issue

in using OS X Leopard 10.5.8 with several older browsers.

In any event...

Good luck & happy computing! 🙂
