Q: Running Out of Memory Since Yosemite

Let me start by saying I was originally part of the Yosemite Beta and was running into the same issue.

After running my system for >20-25 minutes a menu pops up and says I've run out of memory and it has paused my programs.  Looking at my Activity Monitor, it says my Mail is running at 64+ GB of memory.  When I restart my system, Mail ranges from 64 MB - 120 MB, then it some how creeps up to 64 GB and crashes.

When the final release of Yosemite was released I did a complete clean install, thinking that maybe that was the issue.  Tonight I received the same error.  After searching online I didn't really find anything of help.  I'm hoping someone in this community can help.

Thanks.

MacBook Pro (Retina, 15-inch, Late 2013), OS X Yosemite (10.10)

Same issue. Installed Yosemite yesterday.  Now "Running out of System Memory."  Twice this morning already... forcing reboot.  And I have 16MB installed on mac mini (2011).  Colleague has same issue on MBP (2012) with 8MB.

I Have almost the exact same problem, but my memory problem is revolving around something called "Folder Action Dispatcher" what ever that thing is?

It sure is starting to feel like this is Apple's way to move people out of their three year old machines into new product. My 2011 MacBook Pro with 16gb of ram has become very difficult to use. Similiarly, my 2011 iPad has also become intolerable since the iOS8.X.

    I'm sensing a theme...

    Hi Seth

Reading this thread, it seems that this particular issue occurs on modern machines as well as on old machines. I'm having the exact same issue, on both a  2013 MacBook Air, and on a 2009 iMac.

So I don't think in it is intentional or a strategy to get people "off the older" kit.

And I for one am relieved by this, because I think the fact that this occurs for people with new and older machines increases the likelyhood that Apple will address what is clearly bug in the mail.app sooner rather than later.  Cheers, JB

Well, not sure if I feel better or worse. Alright, a little better, but how could they let a product out that kills all practical functionality!

I'm down to running a single application at a time. If I could add RAM I would but it's maxed out.

    Thanks,

    Seth

Seems to be system agnostic. One of my machines is brand-new and am having the same issue.

If you added RAM, it would just eat that up. For now, the only solution is to Force Quit the Mail app.

I am having the same issue and on an 18 mo old Macbook Pro, so it's not an issue with the computer itself. It seems that this is happening to a lot of people - perhaps there will be an update from Apple soon. In the meantime, I'm rebooting more than ever (and holding off on upgrading my older 2009 Macbook Pro to Yosemite until this is resolved). What a pain - hope there is a fix for this soon!

I did a complete clean install.  Setup everything new.

All of my files where in my Dropbox account, so I just synced that folder.  It was a total pain, but I thought maybe there was something that went wrong when I updated from Mavericks to the Yosemite Beta.  So I decided to start from scratch.

Makes me feel better that others are having this same issue.  Hopefully there will be a fix.  This is so frustrating.

Don't they tell the Beta users to reinstall the Beta?  Didn't they also tell you to not use the Beta OS on your most used computer?  It's BETA, it's meant to be used on a system that's a TEST system, not your daily driver.  I seemed to have read that Yosemite Beta users were instructed to deinstall before installing the REAL OS when it's released.

I learned this lesson a long time ago.  That's why I stopped playing around with Beta software.  I think the problem will probably get fixed in an upcoming release, hopefully it will get resolved in the first update that should be out soon.

I think we have more memory being used is because of things like Continuity and possibly other additional services.  Just a guess.

My laptop 2014 13 MBPR requires about 5GB with no apps running.

I'm just saying this because others have mentioned it.

But I'm hoping that this issue is a bug fix in 10.10.1.  I mean, no company has ever released a bug free OS with their initial release.

I for one, am removing all of my mail accounts (gmail, yahoo mail) from my system and just using it for iCloud.  I always have mail issues because of how gmail and Yahoo mail works anyways, so I'm hoping that might releave the issue a little.

I only got the out of memory error message once, so i don't get it all of the time.

I'm having a similar issue. As I go through the day using my late-2013 iMac with 32GB of RAM using Yosemite, it gets slower and slower. The spinning beach ball pops up even when opening windows or closing apps. Apps take a lot longer to launch as the day goes on, etc. Seems the only way I can get things fixed is to shut down, wait a minute or two, and then restart. It's infuriating.
