Q: Running Out of Memory Since Yosemite

Let me start by saying I was originally part of the Yosemite Beta and was running into the same issue.

After running my system for >20-25 minutes a menu pops up and says I've run out of memory and it has paused my programs.  Looking at my Activity Monitor, it says my Mail is running at 64+ GB of memory.  When I restart my system, Mail ranges from 64 MB - 120 MB, then it some how creeps up to 64 GB and crashes.

When the final release of Yosemite was released I did a complete clean install, thinking that maybe that was the issue.  Tonight I received the same error.  After searching online I didn't really find anything of help.  I'm hoping someone in this community can help.

Thanks.

My System:

rMBP- 2.6 GHz i7 - 16 GB ram - 1TB SSD

MacBook Pro (Retina, 15-inch, Late 2013), OS X Yosemite (10.10)

Exact same issue.  Mid 2013 13" Air with 8-gb.  Shutting down Mail cures it every time.  4x in one afternoon.

We were told to install over the top of the Beta.  Personally, I wiped my computer and reinstalled and the issue still persists.

Possible Work Around:  I performed a number of maintenance steps on my system this morning and have been trouble free all for the last 14 hours. Before this, as I wrote earlier this morning, the issue was happening about once an hour for me, on both iMac and Macbook Air.

I'm not that confident yet that what I did solved the issue permanently on my system, nor that what I did is a viable work-around for anyone else, but for me so far so good.

So before I share what could turn out to be "bad advice", I want to monitor the situation until tomorrow, and can  I ask:

    • How often does this occur for everyone else?

I have a range of 7 email addresses, a mix of iCloud, BlueHost (IMAP), Godaddy (IMAP) and Gmail addresses.

PS, the steps I took are as follows:

    1. I deleted all messages fro my trash folder
    2. I deleted all messages in my Junk folder
    3. I watched mail's activity window to make sure all deletion process finished sync with the server
    4. I changed mail preferences / accounts / mailbox behaviors for all IMAP accounts to NOT store deleted messages on the server
    5. I made sure that these settings match on both iMac and my laptop
    6. I ran the "Clean My Mac" utility full system clean after upgrading to their new Yosemite version (This removes ALL system caches and trash items)

If the problem comes back, I'll reply to this post.

Not sure of the exact solution but try going to the application terminal and type "sudo purge" without quotations. It pretty much restores any unneeded memory.

Hey, everyone.....just spent about two hours with Apple Support.  For my issue, EVERNOTE was the culprit.  I had to update it to 5.6.2.....this has resolved the mail memory leak on my system....hasn't resolve the google chrome (not responding) issue, however mail is working much better at this point!!!!

I'm wishing I had Evernote on my machine, but alas that's not a solution for me. Evernote is absent on my machine.

Here's a free app (donation type app) that is a VERY cool utility where you can have certain information displayed on the menu bar in terms of memory usage, CPU usage, basically activity monitor on your menu bar so you can visually see what's going on.

It's called MenuMeters and the developer is RagingMenace at www.ragingmenace.com, it's a system preferences pane.  Easy to install and it gives you setup options to play with.  It's a GREAT app.

I use it all of the time to see what's going on without having to run Activity Monitor.

    Enjoy.

Also, I don't know what I did, but I have not had the out of memory error message come up again since the first day, but I do noticed that it's using more RAM than normal for the apps that I typically run.  I'm hoping this gets fixed in 10.10.1.

Already running Evernote latest version, not the problem for me.  I have had mail consume all memory and force quit about 15X in 3-days.  Mail will run fine and then w/o warning consume all memory and force me to dump alll open applications.  I have noticed that this only occurs when I am composing an email and preparing to send.  If I go into mail to read incoming emails, things seem fine.  But, if I take time in composing a lengthy outbound message it seems to trigger the problem.

    Anybody finding a solution?

Always happens when Mail is utilized.  Clears up 100% when Mail is closed or force closed.

Possibly connected to using GoDaddy email server?????

Apple doesn’t routinely monitor the discussions. These are mostly user to user discussions.

Send Apple feedback. They won't answer, but at least will know there is a problem. If enough people send feedback, it may get the problem solved sooner.

    Mail/Provide Mail Feedback

Eric,  What is the most effective method of sending Apple feedback?  Did not have much success today with Apple support in a phone call.  Thanks in advance

If you told a rep with the Support Line, and they know you are having an issue with yosemite, it's in their system.  The other way is to submit a problem with www.apple.com/feedback, but the probably won't contact you, but it gets routed to the team that deals with the particular product/app that you are filing the submission about.  It's probably pretty likely that this is a known issue and development is probably already dealing with it.
