Q: Running Out of Memory Since Yosemite

Let me start by saying I was originally part of the Yosemite Beta and was running into the same issue.

After running my system for >20-25 minutes a menu pops up and says I've run out of memory and it has paused my programs.  Looking at my Activity Monitor, it says my Mail is running at 64+ GB of memory.  When I restart my system, Mail ranges from 64 MB - 120 MB, then it some how creeps up to 64 GB and crashes.

When the final release of Yosemite was released I did a complete clean install, thinking that maybe that was the issue.  Tonight I received the same error.  After searching online I didn't really find anything of help.  I'm hoping someone in this community can help.

Thanks.

My System:

rMBP- 2.6 GHz i7 - 16 GB ram - 1TB SSD

MacBook Pro (Retina, 15-inch, Late 2013), OS X Yosemite (10.10)

If the problem is a bug in the software, there really is only two ways for Apple to know if they don't already know from internal use.  Apple Support trouble tickets and what people submit through the Apple Feedback line.

Yeah, some people might get Tim Cook's, or someone high up on the totem pole email address, but he might not read the email in a timely manner.

There are some that will read some of these message forums, or computer magazines to read articles, but it's not a guarantee.

If the problem is a wide spread problem it usually gets attention and higher priority of getting fixed.  I would be surprised if they didn't fix this issue by the 1st or 2nd update.  Remember, it is a brand new OS that's less than a month old.  Give them until their 1st or 2nd update to get rid of this type of problem.

Another thread in the support community suggested the Mail issue is with transfer and processing of mail rules to 10.10 from 10.9. I've turned off all rules in my Mail and am waiting to see if the issue reoccurs.

    Two items,

    1)     I have no Mail Rules in effect so for me, this is not the answer.

    2)     Spent over an hour on the phone with Apple support and then a higher level support.  Very efficient and helpful.  Was able to replicate the problem in regular and safe modes.  Always related to composing a new email message.  Memory of 70+ gb is utilized according to Activity Monitor.  Takes 2-3 minutes of time in a new message before his happens.

Log files were generated and transferred to Apple who was sending it into their software group with a high level of priority.  I am expected a 2-3 day response.

    Hope for the best!

I don't have any single rule and it happened (at least once up to now)

I just got off the phone with a Senior Apple Support Engineer and he advised to re-install Yosemite and that might get rid of the issue.     He said he was going to forward the issue to OS development, so if anyone talks to Apple Support, get with a Senior Support Engineer, let them know to send this upstairs and hopefully anything on their end will get addressed, but in the mean time, he mentioned to re-install the OS to see if that takes care of the issue.

Oh, and run Repair Disk Permissions before you re-intall or run the updater for any OS update or install.  The same should apply to even app installs and app updates.  It's jut a precaution.

Also, get the download version instead of the updater version.  You can get the download version from the App Store vs the Updater section of the App Store software. That way you can always have that to update with when you need to.

I am having the same issue. Like others I was a Beta user and noticed the problem soon after installing the Beta. I submitted many tickets through the feedback system but have not heard a single word. My system usually says that Mail is using 40+GB of ram and that other programs are paused. The only solution is to kill Mail (and usually any other program) and restart them. The other solution is to just not use Mail unless I have to.

Maybe we can isolate the communication problem:

I have the following mail accounts:

    Gmail

    iCloud Mail

    4x IMAP Connections

    Microsoft Exchange 365 Connection

I do have a lot of e-mail. Somewhere in the 150K message range. But I have never had a problem with Mail. My Entourage (2008) used to have database corruption problems. After I moved to MBOX (Mail) and flat files I have not had any issues.. save Yosemite.

    Please Help Apple.

I was at the genius bar this morning where they did a complete reinstall of Yosemite.  Now, several hours later, the same exact problem is happening.  The reinstall did NOT fix the issue.

40GB of RAM for mail? WOW, that's a lot.  I'm running my mail app and it says it's using 62.8MB.

The on-line systems are meant more for gathering of the feedback and they generally don't have the time to respond to every submission, so it's more for gathering the incoming feedback.  as they can see what the biggest problems based on the number of people with the same issue. Then they attack the most popular and the most problematic that they can fix first.

I'm not really worried about it, since it typically takes 2 to 4 weeks for the first bug fix to come out with OS X releases, and it's only been less than 2 weeks since the Oct 16th release data.  Give them a little time to work through the problems.

Then hopefully it will get fixed in a future update. It's only been less than 2 weeks since 10.10 got released, and it takes them a little time to fix and test any bug fixes, so be patient.  I expect the first update will come next month sometime, hoping the beginning rather than the end.  But be patient with any new OS or app released when there is a major update.   Don't expect a bug free OS the first major release, no one has ever done that.  :-)

What's especially frustrating about this particular bug is that Apple was made aware of it when Yosemite was still in beta (at least according to posts I've seen from others regarding the issue.)

FWIW, I did a reinstall (not a clean install) and will see if the problem persists.

Having the exact same problem. This is a nightmare. So glad I haven't installed this software on all of my work macs as it is unusable. Having to restart 10 times a day. Productivity down so much. Time for everyone to hit social media and see if we can get some action from Apple on this.

I was able to talk with a senior support person at Apple last night.  He said he received some feedback on the issue, and then he had me uncheck the 'Store draft messages on the server' in the account settings for each email account.  While I was at it I also unchecked the 'Store sent and junk messages on the server'.

It's been almost 24 hours and no memory issues since, and mail now only takes up a small CPU percentage.  I realize it still may be too early to know for sure if this was the fix, but wanted to share this information.

The Pram reset doesn't solve the problem.  I agree with you since it always happens when doing something with Mail and it is always Mail that is not responding.  Mail is addressing memory incorrectly or forcing other programs to do that.  Apple needs to fix this ASAP.

This fix is working for me and has stabilised Mail a lot.
