Q: Running Out of Memory Since Yosemite

Let me start by saying I was originally part of the Yosemite Beta and was running into the same issue.

After running my system for >20-25 minutes a menu pops up and says I've run out of memory and it has paused my programs.  Looking at my Activity Monitor, it says my Mail is running at 64+ GB of memory.  When I restart my system, Mail ranges from 64 MB - 120 MB, then it some how creeps up to 64 GB and crashes.

When the final release of Yosemite was released I did a complete clean install, thinking that maybe that was the issue.  Tonight I received the same error.  After searching online I didn't really find anything of help.  I'm hoping someone in this community can help.

Thanks.

My System:

rMBP- 2.6 GHz i7 - 16 GB ram - 1TB SSD

MacBook Pro (Retina, 15-inch, Late 2013), OS X Yosemite (10.10)

The 10.10.1 update is now available. I installed it last night and all looks good so far. It seems to have fixed the Mail memory problems and Safari is working well for me, too.

After the new update problem seems to be solved for Safari and Mail but there is this kernel_task still taking around 1 GB of space from memory is this normal?

I think this is normal... the kernel_task is always my largest user of memory, but it doesn't keep growing over time without limit, so seems correct to me.

I can now leave my system running for days, with many thousand of messages and both gmail and Exchange mail servers, and the memory used by Mail stays a just a few hundred MB.

There is still a bit of weirdness with Exchange mail servers, however, since the "read" indicator doesn't clear promptly when viewing a message. The read/unread buttons change, but the blue dot in the mail list may take many minutes to refresh. I'm still running with the "save drafts on mail server" turned off for the Exchange account, too.

It was a very early call from my side as Safari again takes a huge portion of the memory which blocks the computer. No luck with Safari, in a way it is actually nice to have a solution. Sorry Apple but Chrome

This problem just started with my today in 10.10.1 running FCPX 10.1.3.

On activity monitor, memory usage spikes up to about 65gb then beachballs out.

After a force quit, have kernal_task sitting at 1.15 gb.

I then re-opened FCPX library and deleted all rendered files. This solved my issue and FCPX is using memory again normally. My assumption is the render files were corrupted and constantly drawing memory to render them.

I guess Mail/Safari is stuck on background task that is sucking away memory.

In no way should Mail be taking that much RAM. Most users that use Macs only have 4GB of RAM. That would only be realistic on a scenario where your Mail caches your emails and attachments.

I have also suffered issues with RAM but not with Mail. With me happens overtime with the prolonged multitasking. It is definitively have become a problem since upgrading to Yosemite. I currently have 32GB of RAM, I am only running Safari and I only have 3.38GB of RAM. For some reason my Mac is using over 25GB of File Cache.

That wouldn't make sense since most new Macs only have 4GB of RAM.

Wow that cleared my RAM from 1.5 all the way to 28GB. Thanks. I'll document this command for later use.

I'm getting similar messages but my problem appears to be iPhoto. When i start it up everything grinds to a halt and then 'pauses' according to Force Quit dialog.

Anything i can do to kickstart this again?

Same problem here. My iMac runs out of memory at least once a week. This is really unacceptable. Apple better fix this ASAP.

I'm having the exact same issue, but with Final Cut Pro X 10.1.4, on Yosemite 10.10.2... It says there's a problem with the Application Memory, and pauses my apps, stalling my computer so I can't even move my mouse, which forces me to restart my computer... It only happens when I try and export a video... Can anyone help with this?

Guys, this isn't just a Mail problem. I don't even use Mail, this a Yosemite failure. I have a two week old Mac Mini with the same memory problems. I have 8GB on board and I am sitting at 520MB free with only Chrome running and from a restart with no apps running I start below 4GB and it slowly drifts down over a few hours. I read somewhere that this is just the way Yosemite works and the Memory Pressure is what counts, meaning even if you had 16GB on board your could expect most of it to be tied up well but when the system needed more memory it would "release" memory to accommodate the need.

Apple is making a mistake by bringing out a new OS every year, just when they get the bugs worked they release a new OS and the cycle starts again.

I'm having the same issue but it is not Mail that is the culprit.  I have 16GB RAM on my 2015 iMac.  Photoshop never runs out of memory but when I use Adobe Edge Animate, it runs out of memory even if that is the only app I'm running.  I just want to know how I can increase Application Memory in Yosemite.  Surely Adobe Edge Animate doesn't use 16GB RAM!  Does anyone know how to fix this issue?  I've put in support tickets and this never gets fixed.
