We have been watching movies from an external hard drive via iTunes through Apple TV & are now having problems with no sound on some of the movies. (Some still work). Up until now it has been working ok. Is anyone able to shed some light on what the problem might be please ?
My guess would be incompatible audio tracks and/or no stereo track.
You could try adjusting Dolby Digital audio settings in AppleTV Settings - off will play stereo if available, on will force dolby digital if available even if your tv can;t handle it, Auto will choose what it thinks your output device/TV can handle.
It can't be as I have had these movies on the hard drive & played them before without any problems. Some are still playing with sound & others play but don't have sound
Good to know they worked ok before.
I would still check DD settings in case a software update has changed this or someone has inadvertently done so. Worth unpowering AppleTV too sometimes with audio glitches.
Is audio via TV, Home Theatre setup, other? HDMI or optical audio being used?
Try something like MediaInfo to get the specs for the encoded files (assuming they are not from itunes).
It should matter not if the files are on an external drive or internal drive - if the file plays but has no sound I think the file location is not the cause, but you could test.
