Yosemite and Java Runtime Environment?

Same deal. After installing Yosemite, I get a pop-up every once in a while stating, "to run this web content you need to install Java Runtime" or some such. I clicked on the "More Info" button which took me to an Oracle site that states that Yosemite requires runtime version of Java 8u25 and that I shouldn't use Java 6 or Java 7. I downloaded JRE 8u25 and installed it. I'm still getting the pop-up every once in a while.

After doing some google-fu, I'm seeing that this a common problem. I'm also getting conflicting or, at least for me, confusing information:

1. Some are saying that some app on my machine is looking for Java 6, which is installed differently than Java 8, and not seeing J6 causes the pop-up. From there, I'm seeing different solutions:

a. Don't install Java 8; install Java 6 from a link at an Apple support doc. This doc is older than Yosemite's release so I'm hesitant about this.

b. The app that is looking for Java 6 needs to be updated to look for and work with Java 8; nothing I can do here but wait for updates.

c. If I create something called sym-links (or correct those that already exist, not sure which), I could make the app searching for Java 6 RE see my installation of Java 8 RE. This is over my end-user head.

d. I could install the JDK version of Java 8 and the pop-up problem goes away. I could do this but it seems excessive.

This whole problem is compounded by the fact that this pop-up shows up at different times and situations; I don't know for certain what app is causing it. Mavericks had the pop-up too but installing what Oracle told me to made the pop-up go away. It isn't working this time.

Same issue. Pop up at random intervals without any interaction with the browser. I have not reinstalled JRE or JDK. I removed the Facebook video helper, but the message keeps popping up. This was not an issue before I updated to Yosemite.

TO stop the pop-up you have to install Apple's version of Java 6, which I believe is the last version Apple compiled themselves before they handed all things Java over to Oracle. It is available at this Apple page:

Now I have both Oracle's JRE 8u25 and Apple's JRE 6 installed. This doesn't seem mechanically sound, but it gets rid of that **** pop-up!

I confirm installing ver 6 as described byYoCraig solves the problem.

Thank you for the solutions. I would like to know what is causing the popup in the first place. What program is trying to execute code requiring JRE on its own when the browser window is closed? I want to solve the root problem, not treat the symptoms.

Installing Apple's JRE 6 over Oracle's JRE 8u25 doesn't SEEM to mess with Oracle's previous installation of 8. Oracle's control panel still functions and Oracle's web site still says I have a functioning copy of JRE 8 installed. If all you want to do is stop the pop-up you don't need 8 at all. I only have both because of the order this all unfolded, with the pop-up's "More Info" button taking me to Oracle's version 8 first.

I would think, and this is only a guess, that installing 8 over 6 could very well overwrite or delete 6 or somehow turn 6 off, bringing the pop-up back.

I don't like having both installed, but I'm going to leave it all alone until I get more definitive information.

It would've been really nice if the pop-up told us exactly what process was looking for java. Installing 6 is a kludge but its all I have right now.

I've installed the apple version of Java over Oracle's Java 8u25 and it has seem too stop the pop up from occurring. Also for those of your who may be running Symantec Endpoint ( SEP) version who were not able to run live update due to a java error, installing Java 8u25 then Apples java 6 as stated above seems to have fixed the live update issue.

I was getting a message on Safari and Firefox that told me I had a missing Java Plug-in. I've tried everything but no joy. Last effort was fix permissions. Install latest Java from Apple. Reboot with browser windows and browsers closed. Install latest version from Oracle (JRE 8u25). When I verify Java either browser tells me that I must install the latest version (JRE 8u25). I've tried this about 10 different ways and read a lot of forum posts.

It seems like Apple has done everything it can to frustrate the use of Java short of just blocking it. But maybe I am missing something.

Oracle is even worse. They charge if you want help beyond what they have about Mac OS X 10.10 on their webpage which I have read and tried and it doesn't work.

My current solution is to not use webpages that require the Java plug-in. I am not all that computer savvy and I use Macs so I don't have to be but I have to say Macs and OXS are becoming more and more like windows every time they "improve" the system.

Of course it means we are 2 versions behind as the Apple page linked by someone above says it is the same install as 2013 Java 6.

But I guess I will do it to avoid this dreadful pop up every time. The irritating thing is that error message generated and requiring an old Apple version of Java takes you to the Oracle version 8 page putting you in an endless loop. Lame.

I too suddenly am getting these popups after upgrading to Yosemite. Really frustrating.

I've read that installing Java 6 will stop it but I also understand that Java 6 has serious security problems. Is that not true?

I would rather deal with this pop up than compromise my security.

I'm living with the popup on my iMac, however I'm curious why I didn't get the same message on My MacBook Air after I installed Yosemite. The MacBook Air works perfectly with no popups and I went from Mavericks to Yosemite just as I did on my iMac. As already stated, I'd rather live with the popup on the iMac than add software for no apparent reason other than removing the popup.
