Nov 14, 2014 8:32 PM in response to Fran Roigby Lindafromdarwin,My 2012 MBP did it right after installing Yosemite -for 24 hours all I got was the progress bar going halfway . Then after about the 6 th reboot attempt it cleared up and has worked fine for about 2 weeks- and has now just started doing it again. I don't use File vault either so thats not it. There's no Apple store for 4000 Kilometers- HELP!

Nov 19, 2014 4:25 AM in response to ksanganiby CEShull,After installing Yosemite on my MacBook Air 10 days ago, I was experiencing more and more hung applications, even including Finder, and yesterday I finally found myself unable to get through the normal boot process. Thanks to all the advice here, I was able to use the <Cmd>-R on boot to get into the Disk Utilities and reset both the disk and the permissions, and then I used <Shift> to get into single user mode. At this point a friend pointed me to ONYX at (http://www.titanium.free.fr/downloadonyx.php), which I was able to download, install and run (it is an unsigned application so you need to <Ctrl>-Click to launch it). I used it to do the full Automation scan and repair, except for three things - 1) SMART status (which my Mac doesn't support), 2) Logs, and 3) Automatically saved versions of documents.
After it was done -- took less than 10 minutes -- I rebooted and was able to login normally. And I haven't had a problem since.
Hope this helps.

Nov 20, 2014 3:39 AM in response to CEShullby CEShull,A quick update: what I described above didn't really solve my problem.
BUT, I think I have a breakthrough. Yesterday I disabled all the "Energy Saver" Power Adapter sleep settings (like sleep NEVER!).
Haven't had a problem since. I'm holding my breath that this does the trick!

Nov 20, 2014 6:19 AM in response to ksanganiby NoMoreFreezesPlease,Thanks for all the useful information!
I had similiar issues and couldn't login without a complete freeze. Even in the safe mode I couldn't get any further.
1) Like someone mentioned before: pressing CRTL+SPACE+ENTER seemed to help, but only a bit in my case.
Now I could login and had a working system for maybe 30 to 60 seconds, after the freeze occurred again.
2) In that short timeframe I was able to create a new and fresh user-account in the system preferences.
3) Now, with this new user-account I could login for a much longer time period and installed the ONYX software, like mentioned above.
I ran all inspection and optimization routines in Onyx.
(And in my case it found an error in a preference file from Canon inside the folder Library/Preferences. So I moved this file on to the desktop.)
4) Because my Mac uses a third party SSD I downloaded, installed and activated 'Trim Enabler'.
After a couple of hours there are no freezes so far and the backup is done also.
Maybe this helps somebody.

Nov 21, 2014 1:23 AM in response to ksanganiby Streeme,Kinda "solved" for me. It wasn't Yosemite but rather a hardware issue that Apple did not fix nor recognized. Just 600€ paid to the Apple support.
Have a look.

Nov 25, 2014 11:44 PM in response to ksanganiby digital gonzales,Hi all, I thought I would share with you what worked for me. I had the same issues and I had tried everything written here. Finally I gave up and handed my mac over to our office IT guy here at my work. He did something like this:
1. Logged in with my username and password (it got stucked in the middle)
2. Prompted to change the login/password
3. Entered my old password
4. Hit "Cancel"
That's it. After that he was able to login fine, he even tried it twice to be sure. I don't know if this works for you. I have an Exchange server account and my HD is with File Vault activated.
Hope this works for some of you
Cheers
Juan

Nov 27, 2014 12:11 PM in response to ksanganiby kittyvon, has anyone had any joy from apple direct? The lines are closed for the night and I'm totally unable to access even safe mode!

Nov 28, 2014 12:48 AM in response to venkatmvrby digital gonzales,I actually did not see this being done since I work at a very big company. He just told me how he did it. I was always able to enter my login details I guess he did that from the start using the recovery key function were you can change your password.

Dec 1, 2014 10:14 AM in response to ksanganiby kevinmack18,I am experiencing this same issue when my MacBook battery dies without a proper shut down (left it on or didn't have access to power supply and worked on it until battery died). After getting it powered back up, it get stuck around 50%. Only way for me to get it to start up is to hard shutdown and hit CMD+OPT+P+R on start up.

Dec 3, 2014 6:01 PM in response to ksanganiby Mac Atack,Hi I have exact same issues freezing, not waking from sleep, random rebooting, 3 beeps every 3 seconds etc etc. Had to reboot 3-5 times before it came back on.
I found that these problems for me mostly occurred when the macbook had gone to sleep and I was waking it up out of sleep. (I understand I hate being woken up too)
The solution that works for me is:
1. Open system preferences
2. Open energy saver
3. Put Computer sleep to never
4. Put Display sleep to never (am currently testing this on 15min)
So far so good.
I close the lid when I want it to sleep and when I reopen it is functioning as normal no more freezing or not waking from sleep.
PS doesn't run hot anymore either.
I hope this helps

Dec 10, 2014 3:28 PM in response to Mac Atackby yikesboy13,Had exactly the same issue and resolved it by turning all display and drive power to "never". I assume that there will be a fix soon for this.

Dec 10, 2014 6:16 PM in response to yikesboy13by yikesboy13,Spoke too soon. Seems that this problem is intermittent still on my MacBook Pro and likely tied to Active Directory. Still looking for a solution to the freezing which happens after sleep and the 50% 'stuck' booting process...
