It is widely misunderstood, that iMovie is part of the MacOS-installation - that isn't so! iMovie was ,'til vers09, part of iLife, which was sold separately.

iMovie came preinstalled on any Mac since 2002 (?) ; so, it was always part of the Installer-Disks - which contain much more than just an OS. When you do a 'clean install', for sure any installed app gets erased and has to be installed back again.

Since distribution thru AppStore, you don't have a physical copy of iApps - just register your Mac, and you should be allowed to dl and install a 'free' copy of iApps - even after a clean install (or other maintenance processes, swapping hard drives etc).-
