Oct 19, 2014 4:27 AM in response to mandy1973by ralefave,Mine is a 2010 iMac, but I'm having the same problem.

Oct 21, 2014 4:17 AM in response to ralefaveby jabrewer3,★HelpfulOk, I am a couple of days ahead of you. I had exactly the same issus on a mid 2010 mid MBP. Mine failed after the install, although it worked fine for a few minutes untill it went into Sleep. When it came back on it was in color But you could not really see, Another reset and all went black.
After an hour on the phone with support on Sunday who suggested trying a system management reset. Solved nothing. I went to my Genius apt on Monday. Two hours and 15 minutes waiting in line And finally I got my Genus.
Again a nice guy trying to help, but other than pulling the connector to the screen and getting back my comprised color negative screen no real progress. "I know it sounds like a strange coincidence but maybe you display went bad." Well perhaps you can get hit by lighting twice in a row while humming "Oh, What a beautiful morning" but I did not think so.
I was more lucky back at home. I recently installed an SSD, so I took it out and booted with the old drive and booted 10.9.5. Display was fine. So this proved the issuse was Yosemite install. Here is the good news, when I put the SSD back in everything was great. i know you can't do exactly what I did. Here is what I suggest..
I believe the issuse is bad video driver with Yosemite during the install. rreinstall Maverick or boot from another drive with OPTION. . I believe it will work fine. Then if you are lucky perhaps your Yosemite will work as mine did...

Oct 22, 2014 6:04 AM in response to jabrewer3by nvnran,Well... I have an Early 2008 MacBook Pro and it look like everyone with 2010 or early models trying to install Yosemite have a display problem. I had a problem with the display going Black and no external display too. i was advised that my Display have may have fried. this happened 6 hours after installed Yosemite and i restarted my laptop. i had no other go than to think that my Macbook pro was gone. a new logic board for this machine is really expensive in india. upon researching on Internet i found a video that was talking about Reflow Process. this is to revive your display chip. though i revived the machine (by the Reflow Process) and got the machine up and running again, using OS X Yosemite fried the chip again. after 4 Reflow processes, i removed Yosemite and Installed Mavericks back again. Now ... I have no problems.
OS X Yosemite sure has some bugs with regards to the Display. also you will notice that the Fans are running at high speed draining your battery soon.

Oct 22, 2014 9:28 AM in response to jabrewer3by mandy1973,Thanks for replying...although I have no idea what an SSD is I ended up restoring to Maverick from Time Machine (after trying every other trick I had read online) and its back working again. Don't think I will risk installing Yosemite again - too stressful thinking I had lost everything!!

Oct 22, 2014 9:35 AM in response to mandy1973by jabrewer3,Sorry. I hate when somebody else uses letters, instead of saying what it is. My apologies. An SSD is a solid state drive. It is about all we can do to upgrade our laptops other than adding some memory. Glad you got it working. Perhaps in a few updates, Yosemite will be stable for you.

Oct 23, 2014 4:59 AM in response to mandy1973by tcabq,My iMac now has a completely [no cursor, nothing] black screen after installing Yosemite.

Oct 23, 2014 5:44 AM in response to mandy1973by tcabq,My 2009 iMac exhibited a black screen after installing Yosemite. Because I had started an upgrade from Mavericks to Yosemite, I expected the installation package would finish the upgrade. The installation executable must have been on semi-auto instead of full-automatic, because the screen was dark when I returned to the desktop this morning to see the benefits of upgrading to Yosemite. I couldn't see anything -- the screen was black.
I believe it was probably waiting for a signal from my mouse or keyboard to finish the installation and restart the iMac. Here's what might work.
Turn off power and leave it off for at least ten seconds.
Boot the computer in Safe Mode.
http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1564?viewlocale=en_US
Enter your password to open a "Safe Mode" desktop screen.
In the upper left of the screen select the black apple icon.
Select "Restart."
No guarantee is better than ours.

Oct 26, 2014 6:57 PM in response to mandy1973by mgilhuly@mac.com,Hi. I had exactly the same problem -- black screen with cursor on my 2014 MBP after a restart with OS X Yosemite. I tried reinstalling OS X but had the same result. Then, I used another mac on my home network, found my MBP on the network and used the share screen function to log in remotely. Voila, there was my desktop, waiting for me to log in, just as it should have been, while the MBP still showed a black screen. I logged in through the remote connection and then the desktop appeared on my MBP, and the computer is functioning perfectly. Problem solved, at least until the next time I attempt a restart.

NotebooksI had a similar problem with a Mac Pro and a slightly older Apple Cinema Display. I could connect remotely via ssh but the screen was completely blank. Ultimately I gave up, wiped the boot disk, reinstalled and then used Migration Assistant to restore my files from a Time Machine backup.

Oct 28, 2014 10:24 AM in response to mandy1973by savtargm,This might help someone:
I have a Mid-2009 13 inch MacBook Pro and I upgraded to Yosemite from Mavericks a few hours back. After installation and login for the first time, I also faced the black screen issue. I could see mouse pointer- that's all. I pressed Ctrl + Eject key and choose "Restart" but the same thing happened again. I tried restarting again in the same manner but could see only the black screen after login.
Ultimately, I long-pressed the Power button to forcefully switch off the computer. I was expecting the computer to switch off but it showed me the users menu. And then (without me logging in again), it showed me a wizard to "complete the installation" where it asked about iCloud id, etc. When I finished all those setups, I could see my Desktop- smooth and clear. :-).
However, I am now afraid to shut down the machine because of fear that I may face the black screen again ;-).

Nov 4, 2014 10:38 AM in response to savtargmby Capt Jack,I have a 2012 MBP. I am also running Yosemite. I am having the same issue. I tried booting up with Maverick USB but screen goes black few seconds after I click on Maverick USB.
What should I do to install Maverick? Also, will I lose everything if I downgrade to Maverick?
-
Nov 4, 2014 12:47 PM in response to Capt Jackby Eric Root,Send Apple feedback. They won't answer, but at least will know there is a problem. If enough people send feedback, it may get the problem solved sooner.
You won't loose everything as long as you have a backup, preferably 2 or more.

Nov 7, 2014 11:13 AM in response to mandy1973by 23Stephen23,Apple: Please help. The screen "randomly" goes black. Sometimes twice in 5 seconds or not for hours. I can usually get the screen back by lightly pressing the power button for a second and waiting a few more seconds. When the screen wakes, all of the keys I have pressed in frustration are evident in the active application.
PLEASE update and resolve it.
