How do I change the name that Airdrop displays?

When I use Airdrop between my phone/mac/someone elses device, it always shows my brothers name. I would, however, like it to show my name.

MacBook Air (11-inch, Early 2014), OS X Yosemite (10.10)

Hi Matt,

I thought this might be the issue, however this is not the name that is showing in Airdrop.

Airdrop on my Macbook Air shows my brothers name 'Matthew Selby' (see image 1).

But according to System Preferences - Sharing, my computers name is 'Erik’s MacBook Air' (see image 2).

My iPhone shows my Macbook Air as 'Matthew' (see image 3).

I have noticed also that whichever device I am using, whether it's my Macbook Air or my iPhone, it always shows 'Matthew Selby'. Is it somthing to do with my iCloud?

Hi Barney-15E,

I looked in my contacts and the Me card is set to my name (Erik).

However, this gave me an idea to check my brothers contact and see what was in there. I discovered that there was an email address in his contact that was still associated with my Apple ID (i.e I'd used it previously for facetime, but not any more).

Because this email is still used by my brother (and therefore wanted to keep it in his contact), I simply went to System Preferences > iCloud > Account Details > Contact > highlighted the required email and removed it from the list.

RESOLVED! And now my name, not my brothers, appears on on Airdrop correctly 🙂

I wouldn't have remembered at all if you hadn't prompted me to look in contacts, thanks!

I forget that iCloud links everything these days.

I agree it is an odd way to chose what name and image appear on Airdrop, as this it showed my correct information on FaceTime etc. I guess it's just a bug that Apple need (it really isn't that much of an issue) to fix.
