Mail SMTP (outgoing) does not work after Yosemite upgrade

I have just updated Yosemite on my Mac and MacBook Air and the outgoing mails cannot be sent - the SMTP-connection fails.

It worked fully Ok few seconds before the upgrade was started.

So, I wonder if anyone or Apple can help on getting the Outgoing mails to work again.

iMac (27-inch Mid 2010), iOS 8.0.2

Hello. great idea.. but tim *****!! Steve was our only solution... I downgrade to mavericks and my Mail is working again..

just a few points.

i Just tried everything possible and nothing. The problem is mail app for sure. I could send mails with outlook in yosemite with the same email account.

i Am sure that if mail app let you copy the pop info into the smtp as outlook lets you the problem would be solved. But... Mail app does not let you doing that

Before reverting to Mavericks, I decided to try Postbox (after reading MacFormat's reviews in the Sept 2014 issue).

Wow!

3 days with Postbox & I am a BIG fan.

What a difference!

Reliability seems to be the 1st impression!

Takes a little getting used to but is intuitive; took a while to sort through the Preferences but this is a neat program.

And so far, has displayed none of the concerns expressed about Mail & Yosemite!

But will keep testing it out!

1st impressions are very positive!

Finally figured it out! Here is what you do. 1) delete the passwords for your mail account in keychain. 2) delete the mail account thats giving you trouble 3) close out of mail and reboot machine 4) add back your account 5) BEFORE YOU DO ANYTHING ELSE, go into preferences and un-click BOTH buttons that allow for the mail program to automatically configure accounts. One button is in "advanced" and the other is listed in the SMTP list. Save the changes and do a test message. This finally worked for me. I hope it works for you! Happy Holidays!

Hi,

I am a new user of mac and Yosemite OS. i had issues regrading the setup of email in Yosemite. i was having no problem in receiving mails on both Yahoo, and Gmail , but faced problem while i try to send a mail. i tried many options in the net and apple communities and tried at least 30 suggestions. at last i tried some thing unique and now all my mails (Yahoo,Gmail and cloud) is working perfectly...

Here is what i did.

open launchpad-click mail- frm mail menu click-add account- select gmail first enter typing user name and password( if u have app specific password then type it) finish settings by checking all tabs (mails, contacts etc)

second-select yahoo-enter typing username and password( if u have app specific password thn type it) finish settings

and finally setup icloud..

PLS follow the same procedure. setup icloud lastly

try this and this worked well for me. Hope u will also find this working..

HINT- there are many other options and each works well for different different users. i tried almost 9 hrs and made it ok. i am not a computer genious but tried all sorts .

if u found this working pls help others by directing this technique to them. and pls feel free to ask any questions. if i know i will try to answer ..

thanks

Ok Guys.. After trying everything: I quit Mail, went to Key Chain and deleted all of the SMTP entries for AOL in BOTH the "Login" and "ICloud" lists. Then I deleted my AOL account (in "Internet Accounts") and re-added it.

When I reopened Mail I sent a test E-Mail to myself.. the dialogue box immediately popped-up and asked for my AOL Smtp password .. I entered it and voila Mail is now fixed. ....or should I say fixed for NOW 😁

John, Thanks for your intervention efforts. 11-days ago, my wife's MacBook Pro suddenly quit sending email via her iCloud account. Our other email accounts continued to work in both send and receive. Four hours later, my iMac stopped sending iCloud email, but continued sending on Gmail, a local Exchange server, TWC, and MS's Outlook services. These working servers covered the gamut of SSL encrypted ports. My ISP investigated and said "it was Apple's problem". A day or two later, my iPhone and iPad, and my wife's iPhone and iPad succumbed to the email send failure on the iCloud account as well. I won't turn off the security features, but have accomplished nearly all the go-arounds that have been mentioned here; and again with Apple Support help. I called Apple Support on 17 Jan, and proceeded through two tiers, then finally data recorded a session for their third tier (engineering) on the 18th. They estimated five days for a response. Our only work-around for sending from our iCloud email right now is to go to the iCloud web server. It provides all the send and receive functions for Apple's Mail. The four other email accounts work without a hitch aiming at similar ports and security types as Apple Mail, so this sort-of focuses the source of the problem (for me). These five accounts have all worked without issue since May/June, and even after the Yosemite upgrade. I was experiencing Kernel Panics and decided to re-install Yosemite after the 10.10.1 upgrade had been downloaded to our systems, using a CMD-R OS-X re-install. The re-install solved my Panic issues, and so I decided to do the same procedure on my wife's machine. It was a week later that our email failures occurred - a coincidence? - maybe. Total personal time expended so far exceeds 60-hours. And, like many of you, I've 'played' in the IT Sandbox for 35-yrs. Apple needs to solve this one.

Guys

I just called Apple Support and the problem was resolved:

The problem was:

Outgoing Mail Sever (SMTP) Gmail is Offline. This email is a University Email. IT worked fine before upgrading to Yosemite.

The Solution is:

(1) Go to Keychain Access on Mac and delete all the passwords associated with Gmail.

(2) Go to your email through any browser and reset the password to a new one.

(3) Set up your gmail account.

(4) Check the connection through Connection Doctor via Window on Mac.

All set!

Thanks Apple Support!
