Q: Mail SMTP (outgoing) does not work after Yosemite upgrade

I have just updated Yosemite on my Mac and MacBook Air and the outgoing mails cannot be sent - the SMTP-connection fails.

It worked fully Ok few seconds before the upgrade was started.

 

So, I wonder if anyone or Apple can help on getting the Outgoing mails to work again.

iMac (27-inch Mid 2010), iOS 8.0.2

    hello everyone.. well I am in mexico city and I have the same problems with my outgoing mail since yosemite!!!

     

    1st of all, I used to repair computers for 10 years so I thought I was able to repair this problem but I just don´t!! I have tried each possibility from this 10 post pages and nothing! So this must be apple issues for sure!


    I want you people to know that I am using outlook for mac and that is the only way I can send emails from my domain account for now!!


    the last thing I am going to do is to delete my account from the server and try it again.


    yosemite is not what I was expecting for months!, it crashes and crashes and It is annoying.

    hey pete: Hi

     

    So did you make it work with just installing 10.10.1 and it works or did you dis you move those emails to the new folder and then it worked??

    Yes and and it still works fine. But if you are not going to spend sixty seconds deleting and resetting the affecter account then I have no idea if what I did is of much use to you but yes it was the update that helped as it claimed plus a simply rese.

    Still having OS X Mail issues!!!

     

    Installed OS X 10.10.1 a few days ago. Yesterday all emails accounts worked fine on my MacBook Pro Laptop. This morning none of my IMAP email account work. Yosemite Mail keeps asking me for my password on each account but it never works & tells me it can not verify. Each IMAP account (ISP = Cox.net) is marked as offline & can not be brought back on line. The iCloud & POP email accounts work fine. When I add the IMAP accounts to my iPhone (5S) running IOS 8.1 they work fine. All mail comes across.........Issue is Yosemite & update......Previous , Apple Support told me they were having an issue with some IMAP ISP's and what I needed to do as a fix was to take accounts "off line" and then put them back "on line" to obtain incoming mail. That "FIX" worked but I had to do it each time I checked my email. That method no longer works since the 10.10.1 update. As suggested in previous posts; I've deleted & added the IMAP accounts numerous times, without any inbound mail success. I thought everything was good yesterday, but today I'm right back to square one. 
    Any ideas or can somebody get this info to Apple???

    I was having the same problem as everyone else regarding the upgrade to Yosemite and the smtp errors. I didn't see any questions regarding Outlook for Mac so I just decided to try some different things. What worked for me was using the Apple Mail Settings Lookup (google it). I discovered that the Server Port numbers that were entered into my account preferences and what were shown on the Mail Settings Lookup were different. If you find when you do this your Server Port numbers are different do the following: Open Preferences in Outlook, click Accounts. Then you will have to put a check in the Override Default Port for both the Incoming and Outgoing servers (if both of your Server Port numbers are different). After I did this, my outgoing mail sent with no problems. Hope this helps someone out there!

    Your info was "right on" for the basic Apple Mail program also. I checked the Apple Mail Settings Lookup and sure enough my smtp outbound ports were incorrect. I changed them to the suggested numbers provided by Apple and I now have all green lights on connection doctor in Mail.

    Let's hope the changes hold and do not revert for any crazy Apple reason & I don't know how but the inbound is now working fine also - although I have no idea as to why. I never touched them - they were listed correctly as per the Lookup info.

    Tim, I could kiss you!!  I have had the same problem with outgoing mail since shortly after upgrading to Yosemite and have been tearing my hair out.  The software update fixed the issue for two whole days, then it refused to send all over again.  I have tried everything, and I do mean EVERYTHING suggested here and elsewhere to remedy the outgoing mail problem, have worked with my IT dept. who couldn't find a solution either.  Absolutely nothing worked... TILL NOW!!!  I don't know where you came up with the solution, but it was an immediate fix!!  Thank you thank you thank you!!

    I have the opposite problem:

    Since I've updated the Mac with Yosemite it is not possible to receive mail with the previous setting. The only way is to unselect the SSL option and select "allow unsafe connection". Good. Waiting for bugs solution, hopefully early!!

    I have to say I have spent the last 10 days trying to get my mail to send and nothing has helped....Fast losing the will to live and considering going back to microsoft!

    This solution suggested by Tim Snoot (on page 1 of this discussion) has worked for me twice!  I tried everything else to no avail, but this simple fix got me right back in business:

     

    From Tim:

     

    For those of you having email password issues, I'd suggest:

     

    1) Close your mail client (i.e. Apple Mail, Thunderbird, Outlook, etc).

     

    2) Launch "Applications" > "Utilities" > "Keychain Access.app"

     

    3) Select "login" from the sidebar top left area, then select "Passwords" in lower left area

     

    4) Click into the Search box in the upper right and search for your ISPs server names.  For example, type "aol" or "google" or "comcast", etc.

     

    5) Look through the search results for password entries related to your SMTP (outgoing) or IMAP/POP (incoming) mail servers.  Select them and delete them.

     

    6) Open your email client and try to receive mail, and then to send mail.  You should be prompted to enter your mail username and/or password.

     

    Hopefully this might fix issues for those of you using mail clients that use Keychain for credential storage.

    What has worked for me and a friend.

     

    Change from POP to IMAP

    Reset the keychain

    Delete the mail account and create it again.
