Bento doesn't work under yosemite!

My Bento doesn't work in corporation with Yosemite.

I need a lot of documents that are in Bento 3.0.6

Thanks for your help

Just wanted to add my observations. I had exactly the same problem as marimason, but couldn't get things to work by changing preferences. However, if I hid the 'Libraries and Fields Pane' (under the view menu) I could then make new smart collections, advanced finds and edit smart collections without problems. When I turned the 'Libraries and Fields Pane' view back on, the problem didn't return, so it looks like a solution to this issue.

I hope this helps!

I was hoping that one of the suggestions made above would help me but they did not. That's great that some have figured out a solution but my problem remains. Had I known of this issue, I would not have upgraded to Yosemite. This and some other issues have made me regret that decision. Bento is the only database that I have ever liked and I'm not about to spend money every time something is discontinued or "upgraded." I think every time a company wants to make a little more money, they "upgrade" their software so that all their customers have to pay them again. I paid for the first Bento and every upgrade thereafter and I'm incensed that I can no longer use it as I did!

Some weeks ago I wrote this in response to Colleenfromolympia: "But I'm hesitating - I'm about to get Yosemite - I have Mavericks and Bento 4.1.2 works on that as far as I can tell - I haven't actually used it on it in earnest. But I also have an older machine with Snow Leopard and Bento 4.1.2, however it asks for my registration key and I seem to have lost it, assuming it must have been sent by email, however I certainly never deleted such an email message."

But to Arast and Elcamera:

My key would have been needed on my Snow Leopard machine because it urned out to be a trial version I had never "bought". No matter, I later purchased Bento from the iTunes Store and installed it on my 2011 MacBookPro under Lion, later upgraded to Mountain Lion then Mavericks.

That machine has now been replaced by a mid-2014 MacBook Pro with Yosemite pre-installed. I wrote to Filemaker customer support via their on-line page system and they were most helpful (based in the UK while I live in Belgium): as I had bought Bento via the iTunes store it would appear amongst my "Purchases" on the AppStore. Correct, I re-down-loaded it and indeed it did not ask for a key. I was able to re-import all my data.

However I have not yet had time to test it beyond looking at the data. For example I have not yet tested the (essential for me) link with the Address Book.

I hope this can be of some use - just copying the Bento app from one machine to another doesn't seem to work anyhow.

Good luck,

I'm so sorry to hear of all the difficulties many are having. My plan when Filemaker ditched Bento was to always have a computer that would run it, it's that great a program. There's never been anything as good, though Appleworks was pretty wonderful too. I'm so devoted to software that does exactly what I want that I'm keeping a G4 Mac Mini to run Classic for the two OS 9 programs I can't be without!

Bento 4.1.2 is working in Yosemite for me, and I may have lucked into this situation. My Yosemite was a CLEAN INSTALL and I chose NOT to migrate my apps and data. I installed Bento then RESTORED from the up-to-date backup file I saved. It syncs with my iPads (the Mini on iOS 8.2 and the v. 3 on iOS 6.1.3) just fine.

I've accumulated so much crud on my old system that I'll never migrate, but some of you may be able to once you've got a new Yosemite with a working Bento. YMMV.

As me, you have a clean install of Yosemite. Look at my post of 22 February 2015. Did you get your Bento from ITunes Store or from the AppStore? Either way it should appear in your "purchases" and you should be able to re-download it - no problem in my case - and I then restored all my data from my backups on my old system, Mavericks, which I had cloned to an external disc and then put on a separate partition on my new machine.

So far (touch wood) no problems.

Good luck!

*** SOLUTION ***

I was running Bento 4.1.2 and then installed Yosemite and it stopped working. Bento would startup and then would freeze with a popup "Upgrading Database". I read the posts and tried uninstalling and reinstalling. I then tried installed 4.1.1 and experienced the same freeze. I then tried 4.0.2 and that did open. I'm about to export all of my records and probably discontinue using Bento any further.

The 4.0.2 download can be found here:

http://help.filemaker.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/8604/~/software-update%3A-bent o-4.0v2

Net-net:

Uninstall Bento - Delete it from your Applications folder

Download 4.0.2 and double click the .dmg and install per usual dragging the Bento App into the Application folder

(You might have to go into System Settings/Security & Privacy/Allow apps downloaded from: Anywhere)

Start as usual

(It still might take a few moments to start)

Export your records and never open it again

Hopefully this works for everyone else that was stuck like I was.

Cheers,

Franklin

My Bento works fine with Yosemite.

For some unknown reason, even though I was able to run Bento on my MacBook Pro, I was unable to sync with Bento on my iPhone. This problem only presented itself after updating my OS to Mavericks, Leopard or Snow Leopard. I was about to toss everything but I decided to give it another try. Here's what you need to do.

Frist, make sure you have the latest versions of everything" OS, IOS, Bento for your lap/desktop, and Bento for your iPhone. Back up both devices. Make sure both devices are on the same WiFi network.

Then, because I had a new iPhone, I had to unlink my old iPhone from Bento on my MacBook Pro. Bento only allows you to link with two other devices.

Go to File ---> Set Up Sync With Device and delete any devices listed. Now - very important - quit Bento.

Launch Bento on your iPhone (or IOS device). I have an iPhone so maybe this only works for iPhones. Touch the Sync icon (swirly arrows). Touch Sync with a New Computer. You'll get a warning about files on you iPhone being overwritten. Press on. The next screen will give you a Passcode.

Launch Bento on your computer. Go to File ---> Set Up Sync With Device, again. Enter the Passcode shown on your IOS device. Press Continue. That should do it.

Double check by comparing files, records, etc. on the two devices. Mine worked perfectly. In fact, it works better than ever. (Of course that may be due to having two newer, faster devices.)

Good luck.

Just wanted to add my experience in getting Bento to work.

I use Bento 4.1.2 and recently upgraded to Yosemite. To my surprise, when I opened Bento, the database wouldn't load.

I use a custom database with a custom name, and it's not located in the default location of <.../application support/bento/...>. I had it stored somewhere else. When I tried to use Bento using the default database and location, Bento worked without problems. I then copied my custom database to <.../application support/bento/...> and renamed it back to the default name bento.bentodb. Now it opened flawlessly (and quick).

Thank you t_wex (Tom)!

I had tried the other method of setting the preference in earlier posting, it didn't work.

I tried your method, it didn't work. I was at the verge of migration to Tap Forms (which I finally would).

But today, I found out if I "Hide Summary Row", the "Edit Smart Collection" works again!

And now I can even "Create New Smart Collection", as far as I keep the "Hide Summary Row". Once the editing is done, you can still "Show Summary Row" to see the summary. I am using Bento 4.1.2 on Yosemite.

I will do the migration one day to Tap Forms. But for now, I am happy I don't need to invest my time in this.

I haven't had any trouble with using Bento on my iMac starting 5 years ago until now, with no OS problems.

However. I did find that when I upgraded from iPhone 4 to 5 that this OS wouldn't allow me to sync anything, but I still could on my iPad.

So, I decided, today, to delete Bento from my iPhone 5c then plug it into my iMac to sync it back on again, just to see what would happen.

Oh dear, it synced back on but without all my files! It had gone back to factory setting. However, I then tried syncing via my iPhone 5c and it gave

me a 4 digit code to use on the Bento programme on my iMac.

My iMac said I could only sync one device, so I removed my iPad and was then allowed to sync my iPhone 5c.

Hey Presto! I now have a fully working Bento again on my iPhone 5c !!

Like others, I've tried Tap Forms, and it's nowhere near as good or as easy to use.

So, I guess the answer is, you can only use 2 devices for Bent: iMac and iPhone OR iPad.

I'm a very happy bunny! I hope this works for others.
