Q: Bento doesn't work under yosemite!

I agree with you about OS 8.1, but not Yosemite. My version of Bento is 4.1.2 - and it's not opening, no matter how long I wait, and that's on my iMac and MacBook Pro. Disk utility says no repairs needed, and App Nap has been disabled. At this point, I'd settle for a way to migrate the Bento info to FileMaker, since the migration tool is only crashing - we all knew we'd have to give up on Bento at some point....

MEnaVas thanks for your report. Just out of curiousity, how many records do you have in your DB? did you do a clean install ofYosemite or simply update Mav to Yos.?

And Venessa, I feel your pain! How many records in your DB? Can you temporarly remove the bento.db file, launchBento , and the Open File/DB from file menu? Same ??? as above.

I didn't do a clean install of Yosemite and I have 1259 records. I moved the bento.db file to a different location and tried launching Bento. Did that about 10 minutes ago and it still hasn't loaded. If it was size, the empty version should have loaded by now, right? I'll keep waiting, but seems unlikely.

I have 2 databases of 192 and 184 records (376 total). I have done an update from Maverics to Yosemite, not a clean installation.

After several trial this is what my observation: iOS 8.1 if you have updated OTA from iOS 7.1..8.0...8.1 and your database does not use reminder, calender services then it will continue to work. If you have fress installation and you use a project template that does not uses reminder etc services then it might continue to work. If you are using sync, then depending on your wifi set up and database type, it might work most of the time. But if you crash then you have to start from scratch. I got tired and deleted. Yosemite: My databases are still working. None of which uses contact, reminder and calender. The main problem that Bento faced before being extincted was synchronization wih iCal, Contact etc. As those were migrating to icloud, old ways to sync. was not possible. Those who still remember, these were the functionality which were stepwise cut in the later updates. Most likely it was too much to write it from the fresh and Apple had many other fishes to fry. What is surprising is that other than Tap Forms, no other similar database (for the rest of us) exist even today. RIP Bento, Aperture, Claris Home Page, Appleworks (had a nice database), Hypercard,  and all other nice program that Apple will create and destroy over the next few years. I now hate (over) emphasis on thinness of the devices.

My experience with Bento 3:

Works fine (loads normally and you can connect normally to a shared database on a network) on Yosemite public beta 2. I have not been able to connect to a shared database on all versions of Yosemite public beta 3 and onward (including on the final version).

I will try Bento 4 on Yosemite public 2 and report back later.

It seems I may be stuck to Yosemite public beta 2 as I need to connect to a shared Bento database.

I installed 4.1.2 on another machine, a newish MBP. That will be the test machine for installing Yos when the next variant 10.10.1 is released. Maybe that will help some of you.

And yes. If you just launch Bento from scratch, it should just open a blank DB. I did notice that when I installed 4.1.2 running Mavericks 10.9.5 and first started that up, the app just hung even though there was no DB! I force quit, relaunched and then it was OK.

I am starting to think more in the direction of what is most import for me: to be able to have a DB that syncs with Contacts, or just to have the DB works. I think I could live without Contact sync since I mostly use that so that Contacts syncs with IPhone. I could live with out that, but not having a DB that doesn't work, especially since I have around 4000 records. No photos, templates, nothing fancy, just very basic.

My main Bento database is on my iMac.  But I do my Bento (manual) backups to my DropBox folder.  A week ago I upgraded my MacBook Air to Yosemite, opened Bento, restored from the backup that was on the DropBox and everything worked perfect.  So that gave me the confidence to upgrade my iMac to Yosemite.  Did that yesterday, but today cannot open Bento.  It just stalls at "Opening database"  It's been sitting there like that for about 15 minutes.  I quite and reopened - twice.  Will let it sit for now.  But I've already purchased TapForms and may begin the process of migrating everything there.  I manage membership lists for 2 organizations, plus I have a large photo equipment inventory in Bento, so it's very important I get this working on both computers and also my iPad.

Like others, I'm very frustrated with Apple.  I was a Aperture user but switched to Lightroom 2 years ago when it became apparent they weren't going to upgrade it.  Now this.  And on top of that, my iCloud Drive isn't syncing between devises either.  I've been an Apple user since the early 90s, but I'm starting to lose faith.  Come on Apple.  Get it together.

I thought mine was stalled as well. Let it sit there for longer than 15 minutes. If you are like me, it will work - my database is huge so it took awhile. I didnt think it was doing anything either but after about 30 minutes it all started popping up and now it runs fine. Could be other issues for you - but I would try letting it sit and do something else for awhile and see if that does the trick.

I can now confirm that when Bento on iOS crashes, sync with Bento for Mac doesn't work. The device must unpaired and paired again to establish sync. Does anyone know if TapForms support Bento's smart collections?

TapForms does not support smart collections.  You'll have to build them all again.  I can also tell you I'm having a terrible time right now syncing TapForms - but I think it's a problem with iCloud Drive - not TapForms.  I'll try again in a few days.

I know it's always a challenge to learn new software, but TapForms just isn't doing it for me.  Luckily I have my Bento working on my MacBook Air, but still not on my main computer, a 2010 iMac.  So disappointed.

I have Bento 4.1.2 on my MacBook5,1, running 10.10. Was upgraded from Mavericks. Just tried importing a Bento template with 880 items, It only took a couple minutes to import. Everything looks OK so far. I'm still leaving my main computer, MacPro 4,1 at Mountain Lion, as long as possible to keep using Bento. Haven't had time to explore TapForms any further

It's really odd that Bento is running fine on some machines, but not others.  If I had a current copy of Bento I'd try uninstalling and reinstalling, but all I have in my bookcase is Bento 3.  Wish we could still get 4 from the App store.  I can't even get it to open with an empty database with my 2010 iMac so I'm about to give it up and buy the dreaded Filemaker Pro, which really *****!  I'm working for free for volunteer organizations and I have to shell out over $300 bucks for a program way more powerful than I really need.  I hate you Apple for messing up my life like this.  It's becoming very obvious that it's all about the $$ and not about people.  As a shareholder I can appreciate that, but geez this hurts so many little guys.

Isn't Bento 4.1.2 a free update to 3.0? And also, since Bento is gone, I'm wondering if Filemaker has made 4.1.2 a free download?

I think you need 4.1 first. Since Bento is discontinued is it still illegal to get a passcode from some other source?
